Goodbye, ads: CBS streaming service goes commercial free for extra green

Count a win for ad haters today: CBS Corporation announced that it has added an commercial-free plan to CBS All Access, the network’s subscription streaming service.

Don’t expect ads to be removed without a cost, though. The new plan is priced at $10 per month, which costs $4 more per month than the “limited commercial” alternative. In adding a second tier, CBS follows the lead of fellow streamers, including YouTube and Hulu, which have given subscribers the option to pay for a commercial-free viewing experience. The move allows consumers to better tailor their streaming subscription to their own personal wants.

“The foundation of CBS All Access is not only about giving CBS fans access to more of the content they want, but also giving them more choice in how they watch their favorite CBS programming,” said Marc DeBevoise, president and chief operating officer of CBS Interactive, in a statement.

“The addition of a commercial-free plan gives our subscribers even more ways to customize their CBS viewing experience — from which devices to whether they watch in or out of the home, and now with commercials or without.”

CBS highlighted the new option in a tweet today.

Both plans allow users to watch CBS All Access’ huge library of on-demand content, which includes full current seasons of primetime, late-night, daytime, and news shows. The network’s much-anticipated Star Trek: Discovery will also be available to stream without commercials when it premieres in 2017. There are some exceptions to ad-free streaming, though: Viewers will still see commercials during live broadcasts, just as they would on TV. Additionally, select on-demand shows will include what CBS calls “promotional interruptions.”

CBS All Access subscribers are able to use the service online, on mobile devices and tablets, and on numerous streaming devices and gaming consoles.

Green Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers live stream: watch the NFL Divisional Round for free
An aerial view of the fans in the crowd at Levi's Stadium.

On Saturday night, the Green Bay Packers head west for the Divisional Round of the 2024 NFL Playoffs to play the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers. Fox will broadcast the game starting at 8:15 p.m. ET/5:15 p.m. PT on January 20. Fox will have their top broadcast team – Kevin Burkhardt (play-by-play), Greg Olsen (color), Erin Andrews (sideline), and Tom Rinaldi (sideline) – call the game from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The Packers became the first seven-seed to win in the Wild Card Round after throttling the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 48-32 last week. If quarterback Jordan Love plays like an All-Pro again, the sky is the limit for the Packers. However, the 49ers have the Packers' number, having won the last four head-to-head matchups in the postseason. For San Francisco, it's Super Bowl or bust -- anything less than that will be a disaster.

Lakers vs. Suns live stream: Watch the NBA game for free
Basketball players on the court at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The L.A. Lakers and the Phoenix Suns face off today. Both teams are teetering on the edge of a losing record (Suns 19-18, Lakers 19-19). They both feel the pressure, and also likely see the game as winnable. Hopefully this combo gives us a tight match. Vegas odds set the game as a dead 50-50 bet. The game is at 7:00 p.m. PT and will broadcast on TNT. Here are some of the options for live streaming the Lakers vs. Suns tonight, including a free option and our overall recommendation.
The best way to watch the Lakers vs. Suns live stream

We recommend using Sling TV to watch the Lakers vs. Suns live stream. That's because, out of all the cable replacement services, Sling TV is the best at letting you pick which channels to subscribe to. This way you don't pay for a ton of channels you never watch. You get to choose between Sling TV Orange, Blue, or both. This game is on TNT, which is part of both packages. If your main reason for subscribing is for NBA games, you should pick Orange, since it includes ESPN. Right now you can get your first month of Sling TV for $15 -- that's $25 off the usual price. At the time of writing there is no Sling TV free trial, but it's worth checking yourself.
