Filmmakers are nothing if not creative. Video games like Halo and The Sims have been used to make short movies and clips for  years (a technique called machinima), but a French filmmaker has taken it a step further. Using nothing but Grand Theft Auto 4, Mathieu Weschler has created an 88 minute long feature called The Trashmaster. The film took him two years to create and is based on his own screenplay.

We’re still in the middle of watching the whole film, but Rockstar, the publisher of GTA 4, is pretty impressed. In a blog post, company applauded the new film, calling it a “stunning accomplishment.”

Here’s the plot synopsis: “The “trashmaster” divides his time between collecting garbage and cleaning up other forms of trash fouling up New York City’s streets: dealers, small-time criminals, rapists… When the dancers in his favourite strip club are mysteriously killed, the trashmaster finds himself hot on the trail of a particularly twisted serial killer.”

Next time you play a video game like GTA, take a look at the game through camera mode, or try to imagine recording scenes inside the game. It’s a daunting and difficult task, especially in a game like GTA, where everything in the city is constantly moving and interacting with whatever you do. The guys at Red vs Blue have been doing this since 2003, but even they haven’t made a full-length film and released it all at once. Hopefully this will spawn more filmmakers to use video game engines to cheaply produce films. I’m already imagining a pretty good Red Dead Redemption movie.

Please share links to any other good machinima films or shorts you enjoy.

Amid huge profits, Rockstar Games makes game testers full-time employees
take two sues gta online modder for 150000

It's safe to say that the executives in charge of Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two are happy with the company's performance as of late. Grand Theft Auto Online continues to generate enormous revenue and Red Dead Redemption II recently crossed 25 million sales, but those who actually make the games now have a reason to celebrate, as well -- the quality assurance (QA) department is being converted from freelance contractors to full-time staff.

According to a report from Kotaku, the game testers at the Rockstar Lincoln studio were turned into full-time employees on August 1. Other policies, including one that prevented testers from having cell phones at their desk, have been eliminated,as well, and workers will have more choice in which hours they work during the day.

3 Xbox Game Pass games you need to play this weekend (May 3-5)
Senua in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

Another weekend is upon us, and you're probably looking for some games to kill time with over the course of it. We're in a bit of a lull right now ahead of a flurry of releases starting next week, so it's a great time to dip back into the Xbox Game Pass catalog and check out some games that you may have missed. There are three games in particular that I think you should check out this weekend if you're looking for something to play.

One is an unsettling adventure that's getting an Xbox-exclusive sequel later this month. The next is a finely animated roguelike indie that recently made its way to Microsoft's gaming subscription service. Finally, there's a relaxing adventure that gives players a lot of freedom, yet is short enough to beat in a weekend. If you're having trouble deciding what to play this weekend, give one of these games a shot.
