Verizon’s new wireless router comes smart home-ready with built-in Z-Wave compatibility

Wireless routers haven’t caught up with the burgeoning smart home trend quite yet. Most of them can handle Wi-Fi just fine, but the vast majority still don’t support any of the other wireless networking protocols commonly used by smart home devices. If you’ve got a device that runs on ZigBee or Z-Wave, for example, you’re generally required to install a special network hub to connect said device to the Web.

Verizon aims to change that with its new FiOS Quantum Gateway. In addition to 802.11 b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, the router also supports the Z-Wave protocol, meaning it can function as a network hub for any Z-Wave compatible device, and connect things like locks, lights, and smart appliances to your network.

Verizon certainly isn’t the first company to produce a router like this. There are already a handful of other products on the market that boast multi-protocol networking, but most of them are produced by smaller companies, so it’s exciting to see a large Internet Service Provider (ISP) like Verizon hopping on the bandwagon.

Even without all the smart home tech, the FiOS Quantum Gateway has a lot to offer. Confirmed specs for the device include a dual-core processor, gigabit Ethernet with a four-port Ethernet switch, MoCA 2.0, dual-band Wi-Fi over 2.4GHz and 5GHz, as well as beamforming technology for increased data transfer rates over short distances. Verizon also reportedly has plans to roll out software to accompany the router that would allow owners to control Web access on a device-by-device basis. This would make it possible for parents to limit the amount of time a child’s iPad could be online, for example, or even set bandwidth limits on video game consoles and media streaming boxes.

The new FiOS Quantum Gateway is available online starting today for FiOS customers, and new customers who sign up for a FiOS Triple Play package will receive the router as part of the deal.

Apple recently announced a new HomePod with support for Matter, but it seems the company might have bigger smart home plans for the rest of 2023. According to the latest report from Bloomberg, Apple is allegedly working on an iPad-like device that could directly compete with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub Max.

Details on the rumored product are scarce, but it seems the device would feature a touchscreen and function similar to an iPad. Magnets would allow it to be mounted to a wall, and HomeKit would give it access to all your smart home products. It’s unclear at this time if the device would feature a stand, allowing it to sit on your countertops like the Echo Show and Nest Hub. What is clear, however, is that Apple wants to gain a stronger foothold in the smart home market -- and this could serve as a great alternative to using the HomePod Mini as a HomeKit hub.

Ahead of the grand reveal, Samsung and Google have announced a partnership that adds a convenient element of interoperability to their respective smart home ecosystems.

Sounds confusing? Well, here’s the easy breakdown. Samsung, in collaboration with partner brands, sells a wide range of smart home devices, from doorbells and switches to lights and garage door openers. However, barely a few of those SmartThings gadgets worked seamlessly with Google’s Home app for controlling smart home gizmos.
