Half-Life 2 is getting Nvidia’s RTX treatment with DLSS 3

Nvidia announced Half-Life 2 RTX at Gamescom, which means one of the best games of all time will get a community-made remaster with ray-tracing, DLSS 3, and more, similar to what happened with Portal.

Half-Life 2 RTX is the latest in a long stream of fan-made remasters for classic PC games that demonstrate the power of Nvidia’s latest technology. Last year, Valve Software’s Portal got this treatment, and Digital Trends called it the most demanding PC game we’ve ever tested. It’s not surprising that Nvidia would move on to what is probably Valve’s other most influential game, Half-Life 2. This game, which was originally released in 2004, set a new bar for first-person shooters and has a vibrant modding community. Now, some of those modders have come together to form Orbifold Studios and are working with Nvidia to release Half-Life 2 RTX.

So far, Nvidia has confirmed that Half-Life 2 RTX will support DLSS 3, RTX IO, and other “modernized assets.” It’s likely the closest we’re getting to a full-on Black Mesa-style remake for Half-Life 2. If it’s anything like Portal with RTX, though, Half-Life 2 RTX will be a demanding game that will only run on some of the most powerful PCs. Nvidia released lots of screenshots to give us a taste of what Half-Life 2 RTX will look like, and it shows off some impressive visual improvements.

Half-Life 2 RTX does not have a release date, as Nvidia claims development on it has “just begun.” In the same presentation where Half-Life 2 RTX got announced, Nvidia also stated that over 80 games are getting what it’s now calling the “RTX Remix” treatment.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake might divide retro and modern RPG fans

After a long wait, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is finally coming to PC and consoles -- and yes, that’s its official title. The NES revival launches on November 14 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. An HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 is set to follow in 2025.

Ahead of its release date reveal during today’s Nintendo Direct, I got a deeper look into all the changes coming to the game, as well as a bit of hands-on playtime. Along with making some key quality of life tweaks, the remake also features some radical changes to story and structure that will bridge it to the first two Dragon Quest games (both of which happen after 3, chronologically). Those modern touches are paired with very faithful decisions that leave the core combat of the original surprisingly untouched – a move that may divide purists and newer RPG fans.
Modern meets retro
First revealed in 2021, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remaster is a project from Octopath Traveler 2 studio Team Asano and Artdink. We already knew that it would give an NES classic a fresh look thanks to Team Asano's signature HD-2D art style, but details on the game have been scarce over the past few years. That seemed surprising for a remake like this, but it turns out that the project is much more ambitious than originally advertised.

Replaced is the Hellblade 2 of pixel art games

Replaced reminds of me a lot of Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, in a good way. The latter game, from Ninja Theory's, is a visual spectacle with extremely cinematic combat and gorgeous set pieces that I won't be forgetting anytime soon. While Hellblade 2 did that with Unreal Engine 5, Replaced is going to do the same with pixel art.

Replaced has had some amazing trailers across various gaming showcases over the past few years, so I was stoked to go hands-on with it at Summer Game Fest Play Days. Now that I have, I can't wait to see more from this adventure that might put even Square Enix's HD-2D RPGs to shame.

Alan Wake 2’s Night Springs DLC gets a surprise release tomorrow

Remedy Entertainment showed off a new trailer for the first Alan Wake 2 DLC titled Night Springs at Summer Games Fest. The expansion will be released tomorrow, Saturday, June 8 and be included in the expansion pass for those who purchased the Deluxe Edition or one of two physical editions of the game that will also be available starting tomorrow.

Sam Lake took the stage at Summer Games Fest to reveal a new look at Night Springs and announce that players can dive in the very next day. Night Springs will feature three episodes. each starring different characters in bizarre situations. The three characters include waitress and No, 1 Alan Wake fan Rose Merigold, real-life actor Sean Ashmore, and Control's Jesse Fayden. Gameplay was only shown in short clips, but appears to keep the same basic survival-horror roots and ethereal environments.
