Marvel’s Avengers tops September sales charts as next-gen version delayed

The next-generation edition of Marvel’s Avengers has been delayed to 2021. As a silver lining for Square Enix, the superhero game was also the highest-selling game of September, according to the latest NPD report.

Square Enix announced the delay in a State of the Game blog post, explaining that the company “made the decision to shift our PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launch to next year to ensure that we give our team the time to deliver a next-gen experience showcasing all that this game is meant to be.”

The blog post doesn’t specify a new launch date or window for the game, but does reaffirm that players who own the current version will be able to upgrade to the PS5 and Series X|S version for free.

In addition to the next-generation delay, the upcoming Kate Bishop DLC, which was set to drop this month, has been pushed back. The blog post mentions a “slight delay” for the content drop, but no firm date was given there either.

The blog post mentions that the team has been hard at work fixing bugs since the game came out and that fixing the game experience takes priority over releasing new content.

The news comes on the same day as the latest NPD sales report, which reveals that Marvel’s Avengers was September’s best-selling game. The live service game is 2020’s seventh-best-selling title to date, and marks the second-highest launch sales for a superhero game, trailing Marvel’s Spider-Man.

The game beat out plenty of heavy hitters for the top spot. Super Mario 3D All-Stars debuted at number two, while Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 and NBA 2K 21 took the Nos. 4 and 5 slots, respectively.

Overall, consumer spending on video games was up 10% over this time last year, with year-to-date spending reaching $33.7 billion. The strong sales month was anchored by a 15% increase in console sales over last September, totaling $277 million.

When Square Enix announced Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy at E3, I was left a little confused. I was expecting a co-op multiplayer game ala Marvel’s Avengers, where everyone controls a different hero. Instead, I learned that it’s a completely solo experience where the player only directly controls Star-Lord, while also being able to issue commands to Drax, Groot, Rocket Racoon, and Gamora, but not play as them.

At first glance, it seemed like an obvious missed opportunity. I mean, who wants to play as Star-Lord when Groot is standing right there? But after playing a 90-minute demo of the game, I’m completely sold on the concept. The traffic-directing gameplay of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy nails the team-based dynamic of a Marvel squad better than any superhero game I’ve played.
A sly parody
I started off a little ways into the story, as my team lazed aboard the Milano. After bantering with Rocket Racoon and getting some of his tragic backstory, I jumped in the cockpit and navigated to our first mission. We needed to head down to a planet and grab parts to fix the ship -- it seemed a pesky llama chewed through some wires.

Crystal Dynamics recently released a 2021 road map for Marvel's Avengers. It showcases all of the new content that players can expect for the rest of the year. Most notable in the road map is that Spider-Man is finally coming as a playable character, plus players will see the game's first raid and new reworks to the gear and resources.

It has been a full year since Marvel's Avengers was released, and it has seen a plethora of updates and changes to help it rebound from its less than ideal launch. With this new road map, players will finally get content that was supposed to be in the game since the start. Before the game was released, Square Enix announced that Spider-Man would be a playable character for PlayStation players. However, it has been a full year and Spider-Man has not swung into the game as of yet. The webslinger will finally join the roster with a new Hero Event, but no other details have been announced.

Marvel’s Avengers War for Wakanda DLC looks to the real world for inspiration

Marvel’s Avengers first year didn’t quite go as expected. The live service game seemed like it would be an easy hit, putting players in control of Earth’s mightiest multiplayer party. The game suffered at launch, however, as a laundry list of bugs threw those plans into disarray. The developers at Crystal Dynamics were forced to delay DLC, new characters, and even the game’s next-gen upgrade just to get it under control. The unforgiving gaming world was quick to dogpile on it, putting it on the path of failed games like Anthem.

That’s why the game’s new War for Wakanda update, which launches on August 17, is so crucial. While this is the game’s third piece of free DLC, it’s easily the most high-profile one yet (no disrespect to Hawkeye and Kate Bishop). With a culturally hot character like Black Panther attached, it’s likely that new and old players will flock to the game to see if it’s managed to clean up its act and make a No Man’s Sky-sized recovery. That’s a lot of pressure for one update.
