Behaviour Interactive revealed some of the game-changing updates that are coming to Dead by Daylight this year. That includes a new 2v8 mode and crossovers with two iconic franchises.

As was teased last week, Dead by Daylight’s next chapter will be Dungeons & Dragons-themed. It adds Vecna (the D&D version, not the Stranger Things one) as a killer and a Bard named Aestri Yazar as a new survivor. Vecna’s abilities include the self-explanatory Fly, the spectral entity-summoning Flight of the Damned, the Pallet-blocking Mage Hand, and a survivor-revealing area-of-effect attack called Dispelling Sphere.

Yazar’s skills include creating a copy of herself with Mirrored Illusion, rolling a d20 and potentially buffing survivors with Bardic Inspiration, and Still Sight, which lets her see the aura of generators, totems, and chests while standing still. The Dungeons & Dragons chapter also adds a new map called the Forgotten Ruins. It’s populated with chests; to open them, players roll a d20 and can enable a variety of effects depending on the result of their roll.

The 2v8 mode coming to Dead by Daylight in 2024 is just as exciting. At a press conference attended by Digital Trends, Matt Spriggens, design director, says Behaviour wanted to “focus more on the fun aspect of Dead by Daylight and make it more of a party mode” with 2v8. It will support five killers and “most Survivors” when it launches, and will feature its own bigger maps, remove hooks, and introduce a class system to encourage cooperation.

Finally, Behaviour Interactive teased a Castlevania chapter for later this year, although it wouldn’t say much more about it at this time. Dead by Daylight is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Behaviour Interactive is committed to growing Dead by Daylight as a franchise. That much is clear given that three spinoff games from the multiplayer horror hit were shown off during a live stream today. One of them is even out now.

All three games were shown during Dead by Daylight's 8th anniversary stream, where Behaviour Interactive also revealed the horror game's new 2v8 mode. In addition to the base game's new updates, the Dead by Daylight universe will expand with three games: Project T, The Casting of Frank Stone, and What the Fog.

Alan Wake is coming to Dead by Daylight later this month
Alan Wake in Dead by Daylight.

Behaviour Interactive announced today that multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight will cross over with Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake later this month.

Alan Wake is just the latest of several crossover characters to come by Dead by Daylight. Just last year, the multiplayer horror game crossed over with franchises like Alien and Child's Play; Nicolas Cage also came to the game as a survivor. This Alan Wake crossover feels particularly timely, as Alan Wake 2 launched in October 2023 to critical acclaim, bringing Remedy Entertainment's cult classic horror franchise into the mainstream.

Dead by Daylight goes single-player with The Casting of Frank Stone

Behaviour Interactive revealed The Casting of Frank Stone, a new narrative-focused single-player horror title set in the Dead by Daylight universe, at The Game Awards 2023.

Dead by Daylight has stayed relevant in the competitive landscape of live-service multiplayer titles in no small part due to the rollout of horror films' most iconic characters, as well as its addicting gameplay. For as popular as this asymmetrical game centered around four survivors attempting to avoid and escape one powerful killer --such as Chucky, Ghostface, and even Nic Cage -- has become, a strong narrative has never been a key ingredient in its success. We already knew the universe would be expanded with a Blumhouse-produced film adaptation, however, we now know that players looking to fully engross themselves in a new original story in that universe will finally get that chance.
