Ghost of Tsushima’s in-game stats illustrate its wild popularity

PlayStation revealed collective in-game player statistics for Ghost of Tsushima on Friday, July 31, demonstrating the game’s sheer popularity among PS4 owners from their gameplay activity.

Among those playing Ghost of Tsushima online, PlayStation captioned the tweet with a calculated 57.5 million duels in combat, 15.5 player-captured images, foxes petted totaling 8.8 million, and 810.3 years on horseback.

More in-game statistics include 17.1 million completed bamboo strikes, 37.5 million honored Inari Shrines, 28.1 million played flute songs, 16.2 million visited hot springs, 14.2 million written haikus, 139.4 million submitted foes, and over 156 million standoffs. Given these are 10 days’ worth of statistics, these numbers will undoubtedly grow over time.

Ghost of Tsushima is Sony developer Sucker Punch’s effort released earlier in July and the PS4’s newest exclusive IP, taking place during the samurai era in Japan with a major focus on sword combat and stealth mechanics. With the game out for 10 days, PlayStation revealed gameplay statistics on its Twitter account.

Ghost of Tsushima has been a resounding success for both Sucker Punch and Sony. The game is now the fastest-selling new IP for the PlayStation 4, according to PlayStation. With Ghost of Tsushima shipping 2.4 million copies in its first three days of release internationally, the game is a clear commercial and critical success for Sony. Digital Trends gave the game 4.5 stars, praising it for its contemplative narrative, presentation, and impressive open-world but was crucial of characters’ awkward facial animations.

Ghost of Tsushima is likely one of the PlayStation 4’s final swan songs, along with The Last of Us Part II, which was also a huge record-setting success, selling 4 million copies in its first three days of release.  Cross-platform titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time will release on the console before, or just as, the PlayStation 5 launches, but Ghost of Tsushima marks the last significant new IP to release during the PlayStation 4’s life cycle.

With a string of successful exclusives, Sony may be able to continue its stride with the PlayStation 5, with releases like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Horizon Forbidden West in development. The PS5 does not currently have a set launch date, though it will be arriving in the 2020 holiday season.

After a shockingly strong January for video game releases, February 2023 was relatively quieter, held up by just a couple of big releases, remasters, and the launch of a new VR headset. There are still plenty of games worth playing, but you probably got the most out of February if you're a Nintendo Switch owner.
We've combed through this month's big releases to share our favorites, but let's address the elephant in the room: Hogwarts Legacy was the most notable release of February, despite being mired in controversy. While Harry Potter fans are enjoying the title, Digital Trends was a bit less enamored with it in our two-and-a-half star review. Writer Giovanni Colantonio criticized the open-world game's uninspired use of magic and generic design, noting that nostalgia for the IP does a lot of the heavy lifting.
As such, we've left it off this month's list for a simple reason: There were just better games released in February. Our goal with this series of lists is always to compile the very best gaming has to offer every month, not necessarily the most talked-about games. From excellent remasters to a surprisingly robust rhythm RPG, these were no shortage of titles that deserved a shout-out. These were our six favorite games released in February (plus one great piece of hardware).
Metroid Prime Remastered

GameCube classic Metroid Prime is already considered one of the best games of all time by many people. As such, it’s no surprise that a Nintendo Switch remaster that adds dual analog supports and makes the game look even better is one of the best releases of the month. Metroid Prime Remastered even got a surprise launch during a Nintendo Direct, adding even more excitement to its release ahead of a physical release on February 22.
“While it might have been tempting to give the original a Dead Space-type remake treatment, the GameCube title didn’t need modifying,” Colantonio wrote about the game. “Instead, the remaster does some quiet technical work to remind players why Samus’ first 3D outing is still an unparalleled adventure two decades later.”
This refurbished version of a GameCube game has no glaring technical shortcomings. If you enjoy beautifully crafted sci-fi worlds and excellent game soundtracks, and want to experience one of the best-looking Switch games, we recommend picking this remaster up. Get these 6 PlayStation VR2 launch games to showcase its features

PlayStation VR2 adds even more games to its launch lineup

Sony has finalized the launch lineup of the PlayStation VR2 headset just before its February 22 release. With that comes the confirmation of the new games coming to the PSVR2 platform throughout the rest of 2023, including a sequel to a critically acclaimed PlayStation VR title, as well as many exciting ports.

Starting with the newly confirmed launch titles, ports of the Viking rhythm game Ragnarock, 1980s anime-themed motorcycle combat game Runner, sci-fi simulator Startenders: Intergalactic Bartending, medieval sword-fighting game Swordsman VR, and VR Guitar Hero-like Unplugged: Air Guitar will all be available on February 22. This cements the following list as PlayStation VR2's 43-game launch game lineup.
