What’s new on HBO and Max in May 2024

HBO and Max tend to start the month strong with a long list of movies from the past four decades. However, May’s movie lineup on Max is looking pretty slim. It is nice to have three original Mad Max movies available to stream just in time for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to hit theaters later this month. Beyond that, the only movies worth getting excited for in May are the Max original romantic drama Turtles All the Way Down and A24’s The Iron Claw, which is based on the true story of the Von Erichs, a family of professional wrestlers.

Max also has the season 3 premiere of Hacks and a new documentary about MoviePass, as well as a lot of reality shows from the Discovery side of Warner Bros. Discovery. This week is a big one, as four streaming services add films. Netflix serves up the Kellogg/Post rivalry comedy Unfrosted, starring Jerry Seinfeld. Peacock adds recent hit The American Society of Magical Negroes. Prime Video adds the Anne Hathaway romance The Idea of You. And Max has remastered and re-released Jonathan Demme's seminal concert film Stop Making Sense.

The best new shows to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max (HBO), and more

FX and Hulu's spy thriller The Veil debuted on the last day of April, and it's still one of the best new shows to stream this week, alongside the third season premiere of the Max original comedy series Hacks. However, Star Wars fans are going to have to wait until Saturday, May 4 to watch the new animated anthology Star Wars: Tales of the Empire.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (May 2024)

It should come as no surprise that this year's hit rom-com Anyone But You has a stranglehold on the top slot of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. But it is somewhat surprising to see Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver completely disappear from the list. That's going to make Rebel Moon – Part Three very unlikely to happen, and it may even discourage Netflix from committing extremely high budgets to its original sci-fi movies.

More tellingly, two of this week's new additions are modestly budget dramas: Miller's Girl and The Judge. The former features Wednesday's Jenna Ortega, while the latter has great lead performances by Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. So it's not a mystery as to why both of those films are two of the top performers of the week.
