Casper’s Glow smart light is designed to help you sleep more soundly

Smart lighting and sleep improvement gadgets were two of the hottest categories at CES 2019 in Las Vegas earlier this month. Casper, the Wave mattress innovator, introduced the Casper Glow, a smart light designed to help you establish healthy sleep patterns.

According to Casper, which bases its reputation on healthy sleep products, the Casper Glow’s warm lighting impacts mood and our ability to relax.

The Casper Glow has a warm, dimmable 2,700K LED lamp that supports your sleep-wake cycles on both ends. You can set the Glow to fade gradually when you go to sleep. The default fade timespan is 45 minutes but you can change the duration with the free Casper app, available for iOS and Android mobile devices.

Before the light turns on in the morning, or whenever you have configured as your wake-up time, an ambient light sensor checks out the existing light level in the room before starting the default gradual wake-up brightening sequence.

Casper uses two motion sensors in the Glow to assist with user control. An accelerometer and gyroscope sense movement speed and direction. To turn on the Glow, simply flip it over. You can dim or brighten the light by twisting the globe. If you pick up and wiggle the light, that movement signals a low, gentle light.

The Casper Glow comes with a charging base most people will put on a nightstand next to the bed. Leave the light on the base most of the time, but you can take it along if you get up for a late night snack to light your way and to avoid turning on harsher, sleep-disturbing household lights. The charging base powers the lamp directly but also charges the Glow’s non-removable battery.

The Glow uses Bluetooth wireless to connect with Casper app on an associated mobile device. In addition to configuring bedtime and wake-up light routines, the app can also be used to create groups of up to six Glows within Bluetooth range. With such a grouping, for example, you could have multiple lamps in one room or position Glow lamps in adjacent rooms.

The Casper Glow lamp is available on the Casper website. The single unit price is $89, but you can also buy two for $169.

Hatch Restore 2 sleep companion shows off minimalist design at CES 2023
The Hatch Restore 2 on a nightstand.

The Hatch Restore is one of the most premium sleep companions on the market, and its successor, the Hatch Restore 2, is looking to carry on its legacy. Shown off during CES 2023, the Hatch Restore 2 boasts a striking new design, a reworked smartphone app, and a nifty feature dubbed “Morning Moment” to help you start the day on the right foot.

Tons of cool features are packed into the Restore 2, but the most dramatic departure from the original Restore seems to be the Restore 2’s minimalist design. Hatch says the Restore 2 was “inspired by nature” and is intended to replicate a glowing sun or moon. The half-dome exterior is composed almost entirely of fabric, which diffuses light from within and creates a warm glow in your bedroom. Three fabric colors are available (Latte, Putty, and Slate), all of which feature easy-to-access buttons that allow you to quickly set your routines before going to sleep.

Nanoleaf reveals new Matter-enabled smart lights at CES 2023
The Nanoleaf 4D TV syncing lights to the colors on TV.

Nanoleaf, a manufacturer of smart lights, introduced several new products to its lineup during CES 2023. The most exciting addition is the Nanoleaf Skylight, which mounts onto your ceiling to provide an impressive array of light shows. It’s also completely modular and can be arranged into a variety of shapes to fit every space in your home.

The Skylight connects to your smart ecosystem through Wi-Fi and works with Matter -- meaning you shouldn’t run into any compatibility issues with your current setup. The modular ceiling fixture can produce more than 16 million colors, its brightness can be adjusted through the accompanying smartphone app, and you can even set schedules to automatically adjust its settings throughout the day. The only downside? It won’t be launching for quite a while, with an expected release date in the third quarter of 2023.

The GE HD+ Wafer Downlights set to vibrant colors.

GE is expanding the capabilities of its smart lights, with Matter support, new product launches, and improved functionality all arriving throughout this year. The news dropped during CES 2023, with GE Lighting revealing not just new smart lights, but also an intriguing integration with Schlage smart locks.

Matter integration might be the most exciting announcement from GE, although we still don’t have specific dates for its arrival. The company did mention that Matter compatibility will be coming to the GE Lighting lineup throughout 2023. The team did reveal, however, that the Cync Full Color Direct Connect Smart Bulb and the Cync Indoor Smart Plug will be the first to receive Matter-compatible versions. Unfortunately, previously produced Cync gadgets are not expected to receive an over-the-air update adding Matter support.
