DC debuts new Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailers

After lying dormant for nearly a year, the DCEU has stormed back into pop culture consciousness. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. took advantage of its prime Hall H real estate and brought out the cast and directors of two of 2022’s most highly anticipated movies of the year.

The first one up is Shazam! Fury of the Gods. A sequel to the 2019 hit, Shazam 2 brings back Zachary Levi as everyone’s favorite teenage superhero not named Miles Morales or Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan, Billy Batson. He’s joined by his foster brothers and sisters, who, if you remember, turned into their own versions of Shazam at the end of that film.

This time around, they are fighting the daughters of Atlas, played by respected thespian and Fast & Furious badass Helen Mirren and former Charlie’s Angel Lucy Liu. In addition to the usual lighting blasts and scenes of mass destruction, there appears to be a huge dragon in the mix as well, which is always welcome in a fantasy blockbuster. Fury of the Gods hits theaters on December 21, 2022.

Longtime Shazam nemesis Black Adam is also getting his own movie, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson taking on the titular superhero. Or is it supervillain? We’re still not sure, as the marketing department at Warner Bros. is going out of its way to paint the comic book character as something of an enigma. Is he good? Evil? Somewhere in between? Con attendees got a one-minute sneak peek, which was (of course) also released to everyone else in the world.

Alongside the Rock’s anti-hero, the film also showcases the Justice Society of America, a superhero group from the 1940s that is represented by Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Cyclone, and Dr. Fate, played by former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan. Black Adam smashes his way into theaters on October 21, 2022.

A new Shazam! Fury of the Gods commercial just revealed a major DCEU cameo
The Shazam family stands together in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

It's no secret that the DCEU is in bad shape nowadays. In 2020 and 2021, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Suicide Squad flopped at the box office. Even the franchise's hits weren't really hits. While last year's Black Adam opened at the top of the box office and eventually grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, the Dwayne Johnson action pick cost a lot of money (some say the budget alone was over $200 million).

In an attempt to maximize profits for that Shazam! spinoff, Warner Bros. Discovery didn't hide the fact that a certain Man of Steel appeared in an end credits scene at the end of Black Adam. Henry Cavill returned to the role that made him famous a decade ago, and fans were excited enough to watch a movie that received tepid reviews and didn't much excite dedicated DC fanboys.

Where to watch Black Adam
Dwayne Johnson strides toward the camera as Black Adam.

Look ... up in the sky. It's a bird! It's a plane! It's ... Black Adam? That's right, everyone's favorite millennia-old anti-hero from Kahndaq appeared for the first time ever on the big screen this past October, and dozens of fans across the world were aglow with delight.

Before you can ask yourself "Who asked for this?," just remember that this is the latest DCEU movie and, as such, it's yet another corporate product designed to sell toys instead of, you know, being entertaining. We must admit that the movie does have its fans, and the curious masses who didn't watch it in the theater are bound to look for it when it hits streaming. But when does Black Adam become available to watch at home?

Black Adam faces a dire choice in the new trailer
Black Adam looking to the distance while standing proud in Black Adam.

The DC Extended Universe has never needed a Superman more than it does now. What it's gotten is Black Adam. Dwayne Johnson's antihero has powers and strength that are comparable to the Man of Steel's abilities. They may even be greater than Superman's gifts. But the thing that makes Black Adam so dangerous is that he lacks the moral compass of a hero. And he absolutely does not hold back in the newly released trailer for Black Adam. The only question now is will Black Adam use his powers to save this world from itself? Or will he destroy it instead?
