Matt Damon leaps, punches and rides back into action in first Jason Bourne trailer

You know what they say: You just can’t keep a good CIA operative with a mysterious past down.

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for Jason Bourne, the upcoming sequel that brings Matt Damon back to the role he originated in 2002’s franchise-starting film The Bourne Identity. Although it’s been more than a decade since Jason Bourne’s last adventure and the events of the new film, the trailer makes it clear that the former CIA black ops agent won’t have any trouble leaping back into action.

Jason Bourne reunites Damon with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass in a film set 12 years after the events of the latter film.

In the trailer, the return of Jason Bourne (Damon) from the shadows prompts no small amount of concern among government agents played by Oscar winners Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) and Tommy Lee Jones (Men in Black). The film’s cast also features the return of Julia Stiles as former support technician Nicky Parsons, who has a long history with Jason Bourne. Black Swan actor Vincent Cassel will reportedly play the film’s villain.

Damon and Greengrass previously indicated that the film’s plot will spin out of events that occurred between the events of The Bourne Supremacy, which ended with Jason going underground in 2004, and his re-emergence in 2016. Where he was and what led him to suddenly make an explosive return onto the CIA’s radar will be explored as the action unfolds.

The script for Jason Bourne was penned by Greengrass and Christopher Rouse, who served as an editor on The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Over the course of four films, the Jason Bourne franchise has earned more than $638 million in U.S. theaters, and $1.2 billion worldwide.

Jason Bourne arrives in theaters July 29.

As Matt Damon scales ‘The Great Wall,’ China is building a bridge to Hollywood
The Great Wall

Matt Damon’s upcoming fantasy epic The Great Wall is being touted as the biggest production in China’s filmmaking history. With an estimated budget of $160 million that could rival a Hollywood tentpole, The Great Wall may well become the standard-bearer for an expected influx of joint China-U.S. co-productions.
The first English-language film by Zhang Yimou — the renowned Chinese auteur behind Hero and The House of Flying Daggers — The Great Wall is a mash-up between the director’s richly colorful epics, and what Damon described as a “creature feature.” From the little we’ve gleaned from the film’s teasers, the fantasy narrative in The Great Wall proposes that the titular monument was built to keep out a horde of invading monsters.

Damon, whose star power is viewed as integral to the film’s overseas success, has been the focus of its publicity outside of China — and not all of it good. The choice to cast Damon has inevitably created its fair share of controversy, with accusations of whitewashing (and criticism of the film’s perceived perpetuation of the white savior trope) dogging The Great Wall in the U.S.

In the mockumentary-style sketch, viewers are brought to the set of the film, where Damon is busy preparing to shoot a scene as Corden shows up. Through solo interviews with both men, we get to see their very distinct versions of how Corden came to be included.
