What’s new on Disney+ in May 2024

Morgan Elsbeth in Star Wars: Tales of the Empire.
Lucasfilm

Welcome to the paradox of Disney+: It’s the streaming service with blockbuster brands and an incredibly shrinking lineup of original programing. There’s no better example of this than Disney+’s lineup for May. Marvel and Star Wars fans have a lot to be excited about with the series finale of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, the three-part season finale of X-Men ’97, and the premiere of Star Wars: Tales of the Empire streaming during the month. There’s even a new season of Doctor Who coming on May 10, as well as Pixar’s Monsters At Work season 2 on May 5.

Beyond that, music lovers get to look forward to documentaries about The Beatles, Queen, and The Beach Boys, while The Muppets creator Jim Henson gets a documentary of his own. All of that sounds great until you realize that everything we listed above accounts for roughly 94% of Disney+’s original content for the entire month of May. So, where’s the rest of it? As much as we love dessert, there’s no main course here. And June doesn’t have a hot Marvel show to fall back on, which means summer may look pretty barren in the House of Mouse.

If you’ve been visiting the Disney+ home page lately, then you’ll notice that it’s dominated by shows and movies from Hulu. Combined, Hulu and Disney+ are a strong pairing, but you have to pay for both to get the equivalent of a single functioning streaming service.

Our roundup of everything new on Disney+ in May 2024 can be found below, with our favorites highlighted in bold.

Not yet signed up to Disney+ or looking to upgrade? The Disney Bundle gets you three services for the price of one: Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for $14 per month.

If you have to watch one Star Wars movie this May the 4th, stream this one
Luke looking off into the binary sunset before dying in The Last Jedi.

Every Star Wars fan has a favorite movie, and many Star Wars fans also hate at least one of the entries in one of their favorite franchises. That can make the exercise of choosing the perfect Star Wars movie to watch on May the 4th difficult. For all of the love this fan base has shown to the franchise over the years, it's also a fan base that has strong opinions about why one movie or another is worthy of your time.

This May 4, though, I'd recommend watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Almost undoubtedly the most controversial entry in the saga, one that makes some people furious and others jump for joy, The Last Jedi is worthy of your attention, whether you like what it's doing or not. Here are three reasons you should check it out:

Disney Plus Free Trial: Can you stream for free in 2024?
Disney+ app on the iPad Air 5.

There is currently no Disney Plus free trial. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. In fact, there hasn't been a Disney Plus free trial for many years. But all is not lost. While you can't get Disney Plus for free, there are quite a few very cheap options. We list all of the tiers and options below: Everything from the $8 ad-supported tier to the $25 Disney Bundle Trio, which includes ad-free Disney Plus, ad-free Hulu and ESPN+. Occasionally Disney has a deal that gets you three months for $6 total, but that's not available right now. We'll keep you updated if it ever comes back.

The best and most reliable way to save is through the Disney Bundle, which sees ESPN Plus and Hulu thrown in for just $15 a month. On their own, Disney Plus is normally $8 per month, Hulu is $8, and ESPN is $10, so this is a great deal.  If it sounds good to you, you should start your subscription now. The price of the Disney Bundle increased to $15 on October 12, 2023.
