What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in May 2024

Netflix

Netflix has generally weathered the aftermath of the 2023 Hollywood strikes better than its streaming rivals. However, Netflix’s lineup in May looks significantly weaker than in the recent past. There’s a distinct lack of blockbuster movies from other studios. Even Netflix’s original series are slowing down this month. The most significant arrival is Bridgerton season 3, and Netflix is splitting that season into two parts, making fans wait until June to get some closure.

There are other highlights, including Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted, Blood of Zeus, and the complete run of the animated spy comedy Archer. But compared to the shows and movies that Netflix had earlier in 2024, it’s really lackluster.

Keep reading for our complete roundup of everything new on Netflix in May 2024 and everything that’s leaving at the end of the month. Our picks for the month are in bold.

The 50 best shows on Netflix in May 2024
Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan as Colin and Penelope looking at each other in Bridgerton.

This week is the fans that romance lovers have been waiting for from Netflix. Bridgeton season 3, part 1 has arrived, and it's unsurprisingly already on top of the list of the most popular shows on Netflix. Fans of this series treat it like it's a Marvel show and watch it as soon as it comes online. That may be why Netflix decided to split this season in two -- to milk it for all of its popularity.

The other new arrival this week is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies and Scandal, which is firmly in the No. 2 slot behind Bridgerton. That documentary is decidedly unromantic, but it does offer some insight into the men who used the service that explicitly promised them anonymity while helping them cheat on their romantic partners.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (May 2024)
The cast of The Courier.

As of this moment, Madame Web is on top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix, but we promise to never call it one of the best movies on Netflix. It's actually one of the very worst films of 2024 to date, and it has to be considered a top contender for the Razzies. Unfortunately, this is an uncharacteristically light week for movies on Netflix. That's why we're throwing the spotlight on two Netflix originals from last week: The Courier and Mother of the Bride.

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (May 2024)
Tracee Ellis Ross and Jeffrey Wright in American Fiction.

There are no mid-month blues for Amazon Prime Video this weekend thanks to the arrival of American Fiction. That movie debuted with some fanfare in theaters at the end of 2023, and it now has a chance to find a wider audience. American Fiction is already ranked among the most popular movies on Prime Video, but far behind this month's Amazon original The Idea of You.

Since American Fiction was the only new movie on Prime Video this week, we're also shining a spotlight on Red Eye, a 2005 thriller featuring Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy, both of whom became much bigger stars in the two decades after the film. Those are just two of the films among the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now. And you can find even more selections by just scrolling down.
