The Marvel Entertainment machine continues to roll, and another classic Marvel character may soon join the fight against movie goers’ extra cash. Joining Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, a Spider-Man reboot and an X-Men prequel, Doctor Strange may be the next title to make the jump to the big screen.
According to an email sent in to AICN, at a panel on Saturday, Stan Lee (who has had a cameo in every Marvel movie to date) mentioned that he was waiting to hear details on when and where he would be filming his Doctor Strange scene, following a Captain America and Avengers cameo.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Doctor Strange is the “Sorcerer Supreme” of the Marvel Universe. Once a renowned neurosurgeon, the fortuitously named Dr. Stephen Strange was in a car accident that damaged his hands and ended his surgery career. Determined to regain his previous status, Strange travelled the world to seek a cure, eventually meeting a hermit named the Ancient One. Strange fought and stopped a traitorous disciple of the Ancient One, and was given the responsibility of being Sorcerer Supreme and defending Earth from mystical threats.
There was no question that with the success and ambition of Marvel’s entertainment division, more Marvel properties would soon make their way to the big screen, but this is the first we have heard on what may be coming next. According to Lee, he isn’t sure on the details of the Doctor Strange movie, including who will star or direct, so of course a release date is out of the question. Marvel has movies on the horizon for 2011 and 2012, but nothing has been announced for after that.
It is very possible that a Doctor Strange movie might hit the theaters in the summer of 2013, possibly along with Iron Man 3. So who do you think should play Doctor Strange? Sound off below.
[Edit: Stan Lee has NOT appeared in every Marvel film. He was not in the Punisher or Blade series, and has missed a few others. Lee has appeared in 13 Marvel films, and is expected to make cameos in Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers as well as Dr. Strange. Thanks to our reader Stefan for pointing out the error.]
