Samsung has just announced that four US carriers will offer the Samsung Galaxy Tab, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

A direct competitor to the iPad, the seven-inch tablet will be shipping in time for the holiday season. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab will run Android 2.2 and will weigh about half as much as an iPad. It will work on all four major U.S. wireless carriers: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

The carriers expect to begin selling the tablet before Christmas. Samsung claims the Galaxy Tab will sell for between $200 and $300 depending on carrier subsidies, but none of the four have announced exact pricing yet. Unlike the iPad, Samsung does not plan to offer a Wi-Fi-only version of the Galaxy Tab.

The Galaxy Tab will have a 7-inch touch screen, dual cameras, and be powered by Google’s Android operating system. It sports a 3-megapixel camera on the back for HD-quality photos, and a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front for video chat.

The device will be optimized for entertainment and will have Flash enabled; something iPad users can only dream of.

Samsung estimates the Galaxy Tab will get 7 hours of video playback on a full battery. The Galaxy Tab will have full access to Android’s app store, including some programs designed specifically for the larger device.

For those who were shy of buying an iPad, the Galaxy Tab is a viable competitor. As we reported earlier today, Google says Android 2.2  isn’t designed for tablets, though the company is reportedly working on a version that plays nicely with bigger screens.

The front and back of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+.

Not all tablet deals are directed towards power users, because there are also offers that make basic tablets even more affordable. Here's one from Best Buy -- a $50 discount on the 64GB model of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+, which slashes its price to just $170 from $220 originally. It's the device that you should buy if you're only planning to use it for day-to-day tasks, but you'll have to hurry with your purchase if you don't want to miss out on the savings. We're not sure if the offer will still be around tomorrow, so you should finish the transaction today.

Why you should buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor and 4GB of RAM, which are only enough to handle simple tasks. However, if that's all you need from a tablet -- browsing the internet, watching streaming shows, checking social media, and similar functions -- then this device is perfect for you. It ships with Android 13, but you'll be able to upgrade it to the latest version of the operating system, Android 14, so that you can access some of the latest features and security updates. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ only comes with 64GB of internal storage, but you can add up to 1TB of more space using a microSD card.

The 6 best tablets for watching movies in 2024
Two iPad Pro tablets next to each other against a black background. Both have Apple's Magic Keyboard case.

Tablets are incredibly versatile devices, allowing you to surf the web, check your emails, or play games without the need for a larger (and clunkier) laptop. But one of the most popular ways to use a tablet is as a screen for your favorite movies and TV shows. Since they're slim enough to pack into a backpack and light enough to prop up while laying in bed or on the couch, tablets are a great way to catch up on your favorite shows.

However, not all tablets are great for watching movies and TV shows. Some are built with lackluster displays that can't capture the nuances of important scenes, while others are cheap and unreliable – making them a poor long-term investment. That can make it difficult to shop for the best tablets for watching movies, as there are hundreds of products vying for your attention. But if you know where to look, it's easy to find a premium tablet that'll serve you well for years.
