Watch the first two minutes of The Walking Dead mid-season premiere

With zombie drama The Walking Dead returning from its mid-season break this Sunday, AMC has released the first two minutes of the February 8 episode to watch online — and if you were expecting the tension to let up when the series returns, you’re in for a rough weekend.

The opening of the premiere picks up where the mid-season finale left off, with various members of Rick Grimes’ band of survivors mourning the lives lost in the prior episode. With their hope for the future dwindling, the group finds themselves on the road once again, carrying what little humanity they have left along with them.

Titled “What Happened and What’s Going On,” the mid-season premiere was directed by makeup effects expert Greg Nicotero, who has directed several key episodes of the hit series so far, including the Season Four and Season Five premieres. The Walking Dead has already been renewed for a sixth season, which is expected to premiere in the fall.

The series is based on the comic book created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. It stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chad Coleman, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney, Danai Gurira, and Sonequa Martin-Green.

The mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead debuts February 8 at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.

The Walking Dead franchise is forcing two unlikely allies to team up in its latest spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City. Several years after the events of The Walking Dead finale, Maggie now finds herself in a dire situation. Her son has been kidnapped and taken to postapocalyptic and secluded Manhattan. While attempting a rescue, Maggie stumbles upon Negan. Negan agrees to help the desperate Maggie find her son in Manhattan. A Walking Dead show means zombies are not far behind, as Manhattan is full of the dead. Yet, it's those that are still alive who may pose the biggest threat.

Anyone who has ever watched The Walking Dead probably knows why the premise of the upcoming spinoff miniseries, The Walking Dead: Dead City, is more than a little bit flimsy. That's because it pairs Maggie Rhees (Lauren Cohan) with the man who murdered her husband, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). And despite Negan's efforts to reform, Maggie has never entirely let go of that grudge. But in the new trailer for Dead City, it appears that their reunion is not a coincidence. Someone from Negan's past is luring him into a trap, and he's using Maggie to set the bait.

The series has been praised for its writing, lead performances, and faithfulness to the source material. The Last of Us is already one of the most critically acclaimed video game adaptations ever.
