Nvidia Ion Graphics Added to Most Asus Netbooks and Nettops

asus_eeetop_et2002The first of the netbooks to hit the market were underpowered when it came to decoding most video, especially if that video was in HD resolution. This left users frustrated with choppy video playback or the outright inability to play some videos.

NVIDIA stepped in and launched its Ion platform that allows the lowly netbook to offload the decoding of HD video from the processor to the GPU for smooth playback and better overall system performance. NVIDIA set some lofty goals for its Ion chipset and aimed to oust Intel integrated graphics from notebooks and netbooks with the new offering. It has taken a while, but netbooks and other machines using Ion are finally hitting the market in force.

Computer makers Asus and Toshiba led the pack in terms of notebook system reliability, with fewer than 10 percent of their systems needing repair after two years, with three-year failure rate projections of about 15.6 and 15.7 percent (respectively). Asus RT-N16 Review

Asus RT-N16

Introduction

Asus’ RT-N16 wireless router boasts a raft of advanced features, including USB storage and printer sharing, an integrated ftp server, and Quality of Service (QoS) settings for prioritizing your network’s traffic flow. And unlike with most routers, you don’t need to be a networking geek to make the most of all this: Asus has developed an excellent graphical user interface (GUI) that renders everything very easy for a novice (as long as you don’t mind fractured English translations). The RT-N16 is also incredibly fast, at least at close range; it’s much less impressive at a distance. However, this device also has a few shortcomings that temper our enthusiasm and hold us back from giving it a stronger recommendation. Click onward to find out more about its pros and cons.

Asus WiMAX-enabled E-Book Launches in 2010

asus-ereader

It’s official: Asustek announced they will introduce an electronic book (E-books) embedded with third-generation (3G), Wi-Fi, and WiMAX mobile technologies by the end of this year. These E-books will apparently begin reaching carrier partners in the US and Europe come March 2010, and will have the same price point as Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s e-readers.

Although, we’re not sure what these Asus e-books may look like, industry insiders say one will have a 6-inch e-ink display and a second model will have a larger, less typical 9-inch double panel display.  Ken Liu from Taiwan Economic News reports that “the maker has shipped WiMAX equipment to WiMAX-service providers in Russia, Australia, Latin America and Europe, as well as introduced WiMAX-enabled notebooks in cooperation with service provider Clearwire of the United States.”

Asus UL30A Review

Summary

A netbook makes a fine travel notebook to check up on e-mail, find night life destinations on Google maps, and tap out a few quick journal entries, but for heavy lifting, Intel’s Atom is a garden trowel where a backhoe is needed.

Yet for anyone who needs a little more, there’s an awfully intimidating price gap to leap to get to a full-fledged Intel Core 2 Duo machine, and when you get to the other side, the weight might have you wishing for your Atom back. A quickly growing crop of machines using Intel’s CULV processors have sprouted up to fill that gap, offering power and portability somewhere in between netbook and notebook. We tried out Asus’ freshman offering in the field, the aluminum-skinned UL30A.
