Boardroom shakeup may indicate that trouble is brewing at TiVo

In its early days, TiVo helped change the way people consumed media by making it easy to record and watch TV shows on demand. There was even a period of time where TiVo became a verb in a similar way some people used to use the phrase “Xerox it” as a catch-all for making photocopies. However, times have changed, and TiVo is going through a bit of a rough patch.

On Thursday, July 5, the company announced that Enrique Rodriguez would be resigning from his role as CEO of TiVo in order to pursue opportunities with Liberty Global, which is one of TiVo’s customers. Rodriguez announced that he would be remaining with TiVo in an advisory capacity and said that he was looking forward to working with Tivo as a partner and customer.

Following Rodriguez’s departure, TiVo announced that Raghu Rau had been named interim CEO. Rau has been a long-time member of TiVo’s board of directors. The company said that it is currently undergoing a search for a long-term CEO to lead the company into the future. For his part, Rau said that he was excited to be taking on the new role of CEO and expects the company to grow in the future.

By itself, the news of Rodriguez’s departure might not warrant a closer look. People leave for new jobs all the time for a variety of reasons unrelated to the health of their current company. However, the departure of TiVo’s CEO does stand out for a couple of reasons. For starters, he held the job for less than a year, having taken the position of CEO in November of last year. According to Forbes, the average tenure of a CEO is just under a decade making Rodriguez’s reign a rather short one.

Perhaps more troubling is the fact that Rodriguez is not the only executive to recently leave the company. His decision follows in the footsteps of former CTO Dan Philips who left TiVo to join Hulu.

While it is difficult to predict what these changes mean for TiVo in the long term, the short-term impact is much clearer. The company’s stock fell by about four percent following the news that Rodriguez would be leaving the company.

It's probably not a coincidence that mere days before IFA 2019 in Berlin, some leaked photos of what is clearly TiVo's next-gen DVR have emerged, courtesy of Zatz Not Funny. It's called the TiVo Edge, and if the leaked photos are accurate, it will be a much more conventionally shaped set-top box than the company's current generation of DVRs -- the TiVo Bolt and Bolt OTA -- which sport a controversial wave-like design. There will be three versions according to the leaked report: One for standard cable, one for CableCARD, and an OTA (over the air) model.

The six-tuner, 2TB DVR will preserve all of the Bolt's features including 4K, Alexa compatibility, skip mode, and TiVO's own voice-driven Vox remote options. What's new is the Edge's support for Dolby's two major home theater technologies, Dolby Vision (Dolby's proprietary HDR format) and Dolby Atmos (the company's immersive surround sound format). But before TiVo subscribers get too excited by these additions, it's worth noting that the Bolt DVRs already have HDR10 and HLG capabilities, but none of the onboard streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Plex have been updated by their respective publishers to take advantage of the Bolt's HDR chops. TiVo puts the onus on the streaming companies for their lack of HDR support. "It is up to the app providers, not TiVo, to take advantage of this capability," Digital Trends was told by a TiVo spokesperson in November 2018.

Unlike some other streaming services in May, Amazon Prime Video is giving subscribers all of the movies that they can handle. Everything from classic Westerns like 3:10 To Yuma and comedies like Airplane! to dramas like Cold Mountain and more are arriving on May 1. Even the German thriller Run Lola Run is back on Prime Video. And if you haven't seen it yet, you should -- it's terrific.

Prime Video is also premiering new originals in May, including Anne Hathaway's new romantic drama The Idea of You, as well as Outer Range season 2, The GOAT, and Clarkson's Farm. George Clooney's period drama The Boys in The Boat is also arriving on Prime Video this month, but not until May 28.

If you have to watch one Hulu show this May, stream this one

While it doesn't boast a subscriber count in the hundreds of millions like some of its competitors, Hulu remains one of the premier streaming services for quality television. The Handmaid's Tale became the first TV show from a streaming service to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The Bear and Only Murders in the Building have also been critical darlings and audience favorites. While these three shows are excellent, you should add another show, Under the Banner of Heaven, to your watchlist in May.

Created by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black, Under the Banner of Heaven stars Andrew Garfield as Jeb Pyre, a Utah detective tasked with investigating the murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter. The mysterious circumstances surrounding the murders may involve prominent members of the Mormon Church. The series is based on Jon Krakauer's 2003 nonfiction book.
