The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim closes in on second-place spot with 3.4 million sales

Video game sales continue to rack up huge numbers this year, and last week’s release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim did nothing to change that trend.

The fantasy RPG sold over 3.4 million units in its first two days of release according to industry sales site VGChartz. While it’s still well short of the 6.5 million units of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 that sold in the first 24 hours of that game’s release, Skyrim is on track to take over the second-place spot on the sales charts.

While Skyrim has already outsold previous — albeit brief — first-week champions Gears of War 3 and FIFA Soccer 12, it has to sell a few million more copies in the next few days to beat current second-place title Battlefield 3. With 3.4 million copies already accounted for, Skyrim is well on its way to exceeding Battlefield 3‘s first-week benchmark of 5 million units.

Still, all of the numbers continue to pale in comparison to Modern Warfare 3, which continues to set records with every copy of the game sold. Given Skyrim‘s fantasy RPG setting, though, the game’s success is pretty phenomenal.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is nothing short of legendary. It managed to win over 200 awards and sold more than 30 million copies from its initial release. This would only be amplified by not one but two re-releases, a 2016 launch that saw a cool 939,000 copies sold in the first week, in addition to the Nintendo Switch port that following year.

Emblematic as the experience may be, Bethesda's lore-riddled fantasy RPG wouldn't be one of the greatest open-world games without its dedicated modding community. From simple graphical touchups to complete out-of-universe transformations, Skyrim mods have evolved alongside the iconic title. Whether it's home to more immersive NPCs or becomes a nightmarish version of the Mushroom Kingdom, Tamriel can now practically become anything a player desires.

How to get to Monkey Island in Sea of Thieves
An election poster for guybrush in Sea of Thieves.

Over the course of its many years of updates and expansions, Sea of Thieves has had a few notable crossovers with other pirate franchises. The Pirates of the Caribbean crossover let you team up with the legendary Jack Sparrow, but the Monkey Island content felt like it came out of nowhere. For those unaware, Monkey Island is a series of pirate point-and-click games that were as funny as the puzzles were obscure. Thankfully, you don't have to intuit that you need to combine a cat whisker with a mason jar to bypass a skeleton guard to get to this new content, but it is more challenging than you might think.

3 Xbox Game Pass games you need to play this weekend (May 3-5)
Senua in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

Another weekend is upon us, and you're probably looking for some games to kill time with over the course of it. We're in a bit of a lull right now ahead of a flurry of releases starting next week, so it's a great time to dip back into the Xbox Game Pass catalog and check out some games that you may have missed. There are three games in particular that I think you should check out this weekend if you're looking for something to play.

One is an unsettling adventure that's getting an Xbox-exclusive sequel later this month. The next is a finely animated roguelike indie that recently made its way to Microsoft's gaming subscription service. Finally, there's a relaxing adventure that gives players a lot of freedom, yet is short enough to beat in a weekend. If you're having trouble deciding what to play this weekend, give one of these games a shot.
