Samsung Launches 3D Plasma TV

If you’re on of those types who can’ bear to put away the green-and-red glasses when the 3D movie ends, then Samsung has a treat coming for you in March in the form of its 3D-capable plasma high-definition televisions. The company’s forthcoming Series 4 (42- and 50-inches) and Series 5 (50- and 58-inches) bother feature 3D technology adapted from Samsung’s DLP HDTV lines. Samsung is claiming the 3D technology is a world’s first—we’d believe that, considering the not-quite-overwhelming demand for 3D content in the consumer marketplace—but what is surprising is that these systems are aimed at everyday HDTV buyers rather than high-end film buffs.

"The Series 4 and Series 5 lines are prime examples of how Samsung is able to provide higher-end features and performance at all price points," said Samsung’s VP of flat panel marketing Jonas Tanenbaum, in a statement. "By integrating 3D technology into the plasma category, we’re offering consumers the benefits of both a flat-panel set and 3D movie viewing and gaming. We’re looking forward to continuing to expand our new technologies across all of our HDTV categories."

The 3D technology will be enabled via an optional 3D accessory kit, but reportedly won’t require viewers to wear those funny glasses: so if you’re in love with those, you can stick to regular big screens. Otherwise, the Series 4 will offer 3 HDMI inputs, sound and video optimization tools, and a new algorithm designed to "reproduce clear images, including fast moving actions scenes." The Series 5 units will sport full 1080p resolution, 3 HDMI ports, a USB port for connecting peripherals like music players and camcorders, along with a single-scan system that only uses one driving board rather than two.

Samsung hasn’t revealed pricing for the Series 4 and Series 5 plasmas, but they should reach retailers by March 2008.
