All Amazon wants for Christmas is to sell you a bunch of discounted Chromebooks

Amazon has run a number of deals on Chromebooks these past few months, savagely slashing the prices of the already inexpensive laptops again and again, so it’s only fitting they end the year on a high. It could be that Google’s feeling Microsoft’s heat more than ever in the low-cost PC arena.

Or maybe the search giant and its partners are looking to clear stocks in anticipation of next year’s Chromebook revolution. Or perhaps these things simply aren’t selling like hotcakes outside of the education scene.

Whatever the cause, we’re glad to see so many Chromebooks go for all-time low prices. Starting at the very bottom, an entry-level 11-inch Acer costs $169, after a $30 trim. The downside? It’s currently unavailable and won’t be back in stock until December 25th, so it’s out as a stocking-stuffer.

Also a bargain, albeit not quite as cheap, is the Acer 13 CB5-311. It offers a 1080p display, quad-core Nvidia Tegra K1 processor and a claimed 11 hours of battery life for the low, low price of $230. That’s discounted from $300, and likewise due on your doorstep by the time Santa comes to town.

Willing to trade the exquisite 1080p panel for some extra storage room and better multitasking support? This $229 13-inch Asus accommodates a few extra HD movies in its 32GB flash drive, and lets you open as many Chrome browser tabs as you need thanks to its four gigabytes of memory.

Last but not least, if you’re not a big fan of either Asus or Acer, this HP 11 will keep you jolly after the holidays pass. While it can only last 6 hours between charges, the Exynos-powered “snow white” 11 incher can be grabbed at $188, which is $92 off list. Too bad it arrives after Christmas even if you order it today.

CES 2023: HP’s Dragonfly Pro Chromebook is the most advanced Chromebook I’ve eve seen
The HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook with the Digital Trends main page loaded.

At CES 2023, HP officially announced the Dragonfly Pro Chromebook, the company's premium new Chromebook. Among its high-end features is a world-first 8-megapixel laptop webcam, which is a jump up from the 5-megapixel webcams found on HP's other Dragonfly notebooks.

HP's Dragonfly series has been a part of its commercial portfolio for years; including its Elite Dragonfly Chromebook that launched last year. But this year, the new Intel-powered Chromebook, along with its Dragonfly Pro Windows laptop counterpart, is targeted more toward freelancers, creators, and hybrid workers.

This laptop completely changed my perception of Chromebooks
HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook front angled view showing display and keyboard deck.

I get the appeal of Chromebooks -- I really do. Sometimes less is more, and an operating system that is simpler can provide a less distracting experience for the right audience. But it's never been a good fit for me.

I'm pretty bought into Microsoft's Office suite, and I'm willing to pay a premium for top-notch hardware. I want my laptop to look and feel like a serious work tool without compromises -- and that's always made me think Chromebooks weren't for me. Then I tried the HP Dragonfly Elite Chromebook.

Asus ZenBook S 13 Flip vs. HP Spectre x360 13.5: you can’t go wrong
Drawing on the HP Spectre x360 13.5 inch model.

When it comes to 360-degree convertible 2-in-1s, you have a lot of options. Some of them are among the best laptops you can buy. HP's Spectre x360 13.5 is a prime example, making our lists of both the best 2-in-1s and best laptops and for quite some time representing the best that the class has to offer.

But Asus has been a serious player in this form factor as well, putting out several machines that have been close to making both lists. Its latest ZenBook S 13 Flip is a prime example, and it has an ace up its sleeve: it's a very light laptop that makes it easier to use as a tablet. Does that give it enough to dethrone the Spectre x360 13.5?
