Resident Evil to sink its teeth into Nintendo Switch with addition of 3 games

Not one, not two, but three classic Resident Evil games are coming to the Nintendo Switch next year, which will further deepen the zombie-infested franchise’s bite on the hybrid console.

Capcom announced the upcoming arrival of the Resident Evil titles through a tweet that is sure to stir excitement among the fans of the horror series who own the Nintendo Switch.

Capcom released Resident Evil, which helped define the horror survival genre, in 1996 for the PlayStation. It has since been ported to several platforms, most recently in 2015 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Resident Evil 0 launched in 2002 for the Nintendo Gamecube, and is a prequel to Resident Evil that was remastered in 2016.

Resident Evil 4 was also initially a Nintendo Gamecube exclusive, but it has appeared in several other platforms since its 2005 release. The game is one of the most popular entries in the franchise, moving away from the slow, lumbering pace of its predecessors, and adding much more action.

Capcom did not reveal specific release dates for the Nintendo Switch versions of the three Resident Evil classic titles. It is also still unknown if the games will be HD remasters and if they will come with new features.

Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0, and Resident Evil 4 will join three other Resident Evil titles that have appeared on the Nintendo Switch. The latest entry in the franchise, Resident Evil 7, was briefly made available on the hybrid console in May last year, but only for gamers in Japan through cloud streaming. Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 followed a few months later as a double-pack.

Capcom is currently working on the Resident Evil 2 Remake, which was one of the biggest surprises of E3 2018. The project is not a simple graphical upgrade for Resident Evil 2, which was first released for the PlayStation in 1998. Instead, Capcom is completely overhauling the game with a third-person perspective similar to Resident Evil 4.

The Resident Evil 2 Remake will launch in January 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Capcom will likely reveal more information about Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0, and Resident Evil 4 for the Nintendo Switch after the January release.

During the November 2023 Indie World Showcase, it was revealed that many intriguing indie titles are coming to the Nintendo Switch over the next year. One of the show's biggest announcements was that Outer Wilds -- a critically acclaimed sci-fi game about exploring a solar system throughout repeating time loops -- is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch next month.

A Nintendo Switch port for Outer Wilds was first teased in 2021 and intended to be released during the summer of that year, but it did not make that release window. We did not hear much else about the port until now outside of a mention during one of publisher Annapurna Interactive's own showcases. An Indie World Showcase segment dedicated to the game showed some of its physics-based spacefaring gameplay in action on the Switch, and it seemed to look nice and run at a solid frame rate. Called Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition, this version of the game comes with the Echoes of the Eye DLC and will launch digitally on December 7. It will get a physical Switch release sometime next year.

Just two months ago, I had my mind blown when I saw Resident Evil Village running on an iPad. While I expected a very compromised experience, I was shocked when I saw how the horror game barely lost a step on the device. I pushed its settings to their limits and still came out with a fairly smooth experience capable of hitting high frame rates. Suddenly, the idea of playing a console quality game entirely on a mobile device didn’t seem like a far-fetched idea.

That was an impressive feat, but Resident Evil Village was built for the PS4 generation. The bigger test would come from more technically ambitious games that are either exclusive to new consoles or rebuilt with them in mind. I wouldn’t have to wait long to see that in action. At a recent Apple gaming showcase, I went hands-on with both Death Stranding: Director’s Cut and Resident Evil 4 running on a bevy of Apple devices, from the iPhone 15 Pro to a Mac Mini.
