Demon’s Souls remake might be a launch title, according to South Korean rating

The Demon’s Souls remake for the PlayStation 5 could be a launch title for the upcoming next-generation console.

Demon’s Souls, a remake of the 2009 PS3 title, was one of several games featured at the PS5 Future of Gaming showcase, which officially revealed the system and previewed some of its highlight titles. While gamers caught glimpses of gameplay and developers divulged more information after, release dates are among people’s most burning questions. However, Demon’s Souls might be set for a November release.

The game was officially rated in South Korea on August 13, making it the second Korean-rated PS5 game behind Spider-Man: Miles Morales, according to Gematsu. With Miles Morales being one of the PS5’s confirmed launch titles, this suggests Demon’s Souls may be destined for a similar launch date.

More evidence indicates a holiday release for Demon’s Souls, Gematsu points out. Traditionally, PlayStation titles were rated in South Korea two to three months before their release. Days Gone was rated in January 2019 before its April 2019 release, Death Stranding was rated in September 2019 preceding its November 2019 release, and The Last of Us Part II was rated in March 2020 before its June 2020 release.

Demon’s Souls may be an exception here, but there seems to be a possibility it will release during or shortly after the holiday season. Games slated to release for PS5 on or shortly after launch include Miles Morales, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Rainbow Six Siege, and Madden NFL 21.

Deathloop was previously scheduled for a holiday release but has since been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While game details remain in question, including next-generation game prices, there is still information about the PS5 thatpeople want to know. The console is scheduled for a holiday release, though Sony hasn’t given an exact date yet, and while many expect the cost of the console to be in the $500 to $600 range, the price of the system hasn’t been confirmed.

There is a separate, disc-less version of the PS5, which was announced at the Future of Gaming presentation. Some expect this to have a lower price tag than the PS5 with a disc drive, though this has not been confirmed yet, either.

I was a PlayStation Portal hater. Now it’s one of my go-to gaming devices

In November, I reviewed the PlayStation Portal. I was mixed on Sony’s streaming handheld at the time, frustrated with a corner-cutting execution of a good idea. It seemed like a poor value compared to simply slapping a cheaper Backbone controller on a phone. As is often the case with tech reviews, though, I only had a short window to test it out where I was more focused on the more objective side of what the Portal does and doesn’t do. Would my feelings change when I was using it naturally?

I’ve gotten the answer to that question over the past few months. While I barely touched my Portal after reviewing it in 2023, it’s quickly become a go-to device in my home as of January. I’m now breaking it out at least once a week, finding some practical use cases for it. Though my overall assessment of it hasn’t changed, I have a more tangible understanding of where it can be a useful -- if superfluous -- PS5 companion. It’s a needless luxury, but one that I’m finding that I'm happy to indulge in.

The PlayStation Portal’s launch just so happened to come right before a major life change that would shift my perspective. After living alone for three years, my girlfriend moved into my apartment last December. It’s been a natural change that’s working great so far. That shift does come with some lifestyle changes, though. We’re both crammed into a one-bedroom apartment, which means we’re sharing a tight space. We remotely do our jobs feet apart in the same room, and most evenings are spent lounging on the couch.

Visions of Mana paints a promising picture of the RPG series’ return

The vibrant settings and character designs in Visions of Mana instantly alerted me that I'd be knee-deep into fantasy, riding on the back of a giant black wolf into the grassy plains of Fallow Steppe. A lush landscape welcomed me as I chatted with my teammates on top of my mount and tussled with little woodland monsters.

I had this experience at this year's PAX East, where I went hands-on with a demo of the upcoming RPG. I never played previous Mana games, but I have enough experience with RPGs and real-time combat to name it one of the most gorgeous, action-packed games I played at the show. The shiny open-world and slick combat I experienced point to a strong comeback for the Mana series coming later this summer.
