Tekken Ball returns in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U

When Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is released for Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console alongside the system’s November 18 launch, it will be trailing the game’s Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 iterations by a little over two months. As a result, Namco Bandai has realized that this version of the fighter will need a few extra additions to attract players who’ve so far resisted the urge to pick up the game on current-generation gaming consoles. Based on a new trailer (which you can find embedded below) and information released during the ongoing New York Comic Con, the company has some very intriguing plans on what to add.

As you may have guessed from the image at top, the Wii U iteration of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will feature a number of character customization options not seen in the game’s existing versions. While the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games both feature immense amounts of customization objects to add to your fighter’s in-game costume, the Wii U game will also feature a number of elements based on classic Nintendo franchises. Super Smash Bros. fans will instantly recognize the above two Tekken combatants as homages to F-Zero’s Captain Falcon and Sheik from The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time. Other objects will allow your characters to dress up as Mario, Bowser, Samus Aran and Star Fox, among a surprisingly large list of other Nintendo icons.

Additionally, the Wii U’s Tekken Tag Tournament 2 marks the triumphant return of “Tekken Ball,” a mini-game first introduced in Tekken 3. Similar to volleyball, Tekken Ball tasks players with batting a ball back and forth using moves that normally would result in your opponent being punched or kicked. Players can wound their foes by blasting the ball into them with great force, or spiking the ball onto the ground on their foe’s side of the screen.

Less exciting, but still notable, is word that the Wii U version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is capable of being played entirely on the relatively diminutive screen of the Wii U Gamepad. According to Game Informer, “the game does play well on Nintendo’s tiny screen, and features very little lag to boot.”

Given how much we liked the Xbox 360 version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and that the only real gameplay functionality missing from the game was that Tekken Ball mini-game, this does make the Wii U iteration of the title something of an ultimate edition of this fighter. However, its entirely possible that Tekken Ball may merely debut on the Wii U, prior to being added to the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 games via those consoles’ downloadable content systems. We reached out to Namco Bandai to see if that’s what the company is planning, and while it didn’t deny the possibility, the company more or less told us that it currently has no comment on the topic.

As you might expect though, those Nintendo costumes are going to be Wii U exclusives until the heat death of the universe.
