Roku Streaming Stick given $99 price tag and October release date

Roku Streaming StickRoku has released further details concerning its tiny, and rather clever, Streaming Stick, saying it will be coming next month with a price tag of just under $100. Announced at CES 2012, Roku declined to provide those all-important details at the time, and continued to keep them secret when it listed some new hardware and content partners at the beginning of August.

To refresh your memory, the Roku Streaming Stick is a USB stick-sized dongle that plugs into an HDMI socket on your television, so the Wi-FI-enabled gadget can bring you all of Roku’s services without the need for yet another box.

The Roku Streaming Stick is essentially a miniaturized version of the Roku 2 XS box, and uses Wi-Fi to bring Internet TV, on-demand content and gaming to your HDTV’s screen, plus as it draws power from the port in which it’s plugged, it really is completely wireless.

There is a slight catch though, as the all-important port isn’t a regular HDMI, but one with Mobile High Definition Link, or MHL; something that’s not all that common just yet. Roku has listed various TV and receiver manufacturers as supporting the format — Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Onkyo and Oppo for example — but owners of other brands will be left out in the cold.

A Roku Streaming Stick will set you back $99.99 and it’s all ready to go on sale in October, when in addition to the standalone product with the motion control remote, some retailers will be bundling it with compatible TVs too.

Additionally, Roku has also announced it will be offering Vudu content from today onwards. The Streaming Stick will have the app at launch, plus those who own the Roku HD, LT or Roku 2 should find the app available soon.

Finally, Roku’s Android and iOS apps have been updated with a new feature called “Play On,” which streams photos and music stored on your device directly to the Roku box connected to your TV.
