Samsung is bringing health and wellness apps to its smart TVs

While many of us have been relying on YouTube to help us stay fit and active during the coronavirus pandemic, Samsung has another option for owners of its smart TVs.

Starting today, the company will be adding six free health and wellness apps to its 2018 and 2019 smart TVs from various fitness brands including barre3, Calm, Echelon, Fitplan, Jillian Michaels Fitness, and obé Fitness.

Samsung’s 2018 smart TVs will only get four of the apps: Echelon, barre3 Jillian Michaels Fitness, and obé Fitness, while the 2019 models will also get Fitplan and Calm.

Samsung’s original plan was to launch all six partners within the holistic Samsung Health app on these TVs, something it will still do later this year. However, the outbreak of coronavirus — officially known as COVID-19 — led the company to release the individual apps early, giving its customers access to over 5,000 hours of free at-home wellness content now.

“As our community grapples with unprecedented disruptions to their daily routines, it is important for homebound consumers to have access to free high-quality health and wellness offerings,” Salek Brodsky, vice president of strategic partnerships and business development for Samsung Electronics, said in a press release. “Our partnership with these premium brands redefines the boundaries of what free streaming services can provide, and we look forward to enhancing these offerings by bringing a full Samsung Health experience to our TVs later this year.”

How much content each app offers for free will vary from app to app. Here’s what you can expect, according to Samsung:

barre3

“Build strength and discover remarkable results with free full-body barre3 workouts, taught by world-class instructors. Samsung accidentally reveals price of its 77-inch QD-OLED TV
The Samsung S95C on display at CES 2023.

Usually, when new TVs are announced at CES, it can take months for companies to reveal pricing and availability. And perhaps Samsung was planning to do just that with its 77-inch S95C, its largest QD-OLED TV to date. But the company seemingly let the cat out of the bag on January 26, by including the new model -- and its price -- on its U.S. website, according to Sammobile.

The S95C details are no longer on the website, so Digital Trends can't verify the information, however, a screenshot taken at the time shows a price of $4499.99, making the larger model $1,500 more expensive than its currently available 65-inch S95B, which sells for $3,000. If this seems like a bigger gap in price than we're used to for models that exist in both 65- and 77-inch sizes, it could be because the S95C is going to be Samsung's premium 77-inch QD-OLED, with the planned S90C arriving in a 77-inch size but with fewer features.

Roku will start making its own Roku TVs and OLED reference design
A Roku-branded smart TV.

Your next Roku TV may well say Roku on the front. After years of leading the smart TV industry by licensing its operating system to other manufacturers, Roku announced its own Roku Select and Roku Plus Series televisions — the first to bear the Roku name from front to back -- today at CES 2023.

While the names are slightly confusing, the gist is this: There are 11 models spanning from 24 to 75 inches. The Select lineup will top out at 1080p resolution and include a basic Roku Voice Remote, while the Plus Series will sport 4K resolution panels and include the Roku Voice Remote Pro, which is rechargeable. Prices start at $119 on the low end and and top out at $999.

Samsung shows off the first two 77-inch QD-OLED 4K TVs at CES 2023
Samsung S95C QD-OLED 4K TV.

Samsung was the first company to show off a 4K TV based on QD-OLED technology at CES 2022, and now, at CES 2023 it has unveiled two new QD-OLED models -- the S95C Samsung OLED and S90C Samsung OLED -- and each will be available as 77-inch models. Both will also be offered in 55- and 65-inch sizes.  The news came one day after Samsung Display confirmed it would show its next-gen "QD-OLED 2023" panel at the show in a 77-inch size.

When QD-OLED-based TVs debuted in 2022, Samsung and Sony revealed the first two 4K TVs models within hours of each other: the Samsung S95B and the Sony A95K. Both TVs proved to be absolutely stunning in terms of picture quality, leaving our reviewer no choice but to award them a rare 10/10 rating. But the TVs themselves weren't especially large; only 55- and 65-inch sizes were introduced.
