Hacker squeezes Google Chromium OS onto iPad

Considering you can already hack the iPad to run Flash and Windows 95, it should come as little surprise that Chromium OS has finally boosted its way over the fence and into Apple’s walled garden.

YouTube user Hexxeh, who regularly cooks up custom builds of Google’s operating system over at his own site, posted video of the iPad apparently running Chromium OS, the open-source version of Chrome OS. The demo depicts the “Chromepad” running the Chrome browser and responding to touch commands, but doesn’t run long enough to show much else.

While the iPad could certainly be robust enough to run Google’s lightweight, Linux-based operating system, skeptics will probably question whether it might be running through a virtual machine, ala this Windows XP demo from April, or even on lookalike iClone hardware from China.

As for the real version of Chrome OS running on officially supported hardware, Acer has already claimed it will be first to market with a netbook, and Google has previously hinted that the first  Chrome OS devices will arrive this fall.

Some iPad users will soon get a feature that Android has had for years
home Screen of an iPad Pro that boots iPadOS 18.

Apple will start rolling out iPadOS 18 to users globally on Monday. The update will include a significant new feature for users in Europe.

With iPadOS 18, Europeans can download and use apps from third-party app stores, thanks to the EU’s Digital Markets Act. The Act promotes competition and reduces large tech companies' control over their platforms, which Apple initially opposed, but is now complying with. It's also something Android tablet users have enjoyed for years, so it's still nice to see the functionality finally expand to the iPad.

The wait for Apple’s iOS 18 update is almost over
Two iPhones running iOS 18.

After months of anticipation, Apple's big "It's Glowtime" event arrived today, and it brought the eagerly awaited news of when to expect the iPhone or iPad to get the update to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, respectively.

Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, iOS 18 is the biggest update to the iPhone in years. At its big event today, Apple confirmed that iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are both officially being released on September 16. They bring many customization options, like the ability to move apps freely on the home screen and change the lock screen shortcuts, as well as all-new themes, including being able to choose colors, styles, and designs as you wish. Widgets can now be resized dynamically using a handle that surfaces when you're in edit mode, and instead of having to delete and read a widget in a different size, you can resize it on the fly.
