The best way to relieve summer is through the movies. One of the funnier summer comedies released in 2023 was No Hard Feelings, which is now streaming on Netflix. Maddie Barker (Jennifer Lawrence), a struggling Uber driver and bartender, is on the verge of losing her childhood after failing to pay property taxes.

Desperate for money, Maddie responds to an unusual Craigslist posting where a wealthy couple wants a girl to date their 19-year-old son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman). Andrew is a shy introvert with no social skills, so his parents want him to break out of his shell before attending Princeton in the fall. If you miss the days of studio comedies, No Hard Feelings will satisfy your craving.

With the NBA about to tip off, revisit one of the better basketball movies of the last five years in Hustle. Avid basketball fan Adam Sandler stars as Stanley Sugerman, a longtime NBA scout for the 76ers who dreams of joining the sideline as the coach. When the owner’s son takes over, he demotes Stanley to an international scout.

On the verge of quitting, Stanley has an epiphany after watching an unknown player named Bo Cruz (NBA player Juancho Hernangómez) showcase his immeasurable talent in a pick-up basketball game in Spain. Stanley sees Bo as a golden ticket back to America, so he trains the young player and prepares him for the NBA Draft. Hustle has a lot of heart thanks to Sandler’s charm, and the film works because of Hernangómez’ surprisingly good acting.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Paramount Pictures

In honor of Killers of the Flower Moon’s release, continue the Martin Scorsese experience by revisiting The Wolf of Wall Street, arguably his funniest film. In his fifth collaboration with Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio shines as Jordan Belfort, a hotshot stockbroker who rises the ranks of Wall Street with his firm, Stratton Oakmont. Belfort works hard and parties harder, indulging in women, drugs, and alcohol nearly daily.

Yet, Belfort’s firm is corrupt as they illegally make money through a pump-and-dump scheme. This attracts the attention of the FBI, forcing Belfort to decide between his affluent lifestyle and following the law. I bet you can guess what he chose. The Wolf of Wall Street continues to improve with age, especially DiCaprio’s magnetic performance, which should’ve won him the Oscar.

An ominous voice says, “If you build it, he will come.” Ray then sees an image of Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta).

Despite his financial hardships, Ray plows a section of his field and builds a baseball diamond. The field becomes a stomping ground for the ghosts of famous baseball players, who begin to play games at night. However, Ray realizes baseball is only the first step as the voice takes him on a journey of self-discovery across the country.

The best feel-good movies on Netflix right now
Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner cuddling up together on a couch outside in a scene from 13 Going on 30.

There is no "feel-good" tab on Netflix, and it's tricky to find films that would neatly fall into that description. Feel-good isn't a genre; it's how viewers are meant to respond to the film itself. If a film makes you feel better about your life or the possibility of romance, or it just brightened your outlook when it was over, then it's a feel-good movie.

This month, the two feel-good movies we're adding to our list are 13 Going on 30 and The Secret of My Success. The former is about a woman who gets a second chance to get things right when her younger self awakens in her adult body. The latter is a very 1980s story, but there are few actors who could pull it off with as much charm as Michael J. Fox doed in this film.
