A man looks up in a cave in Dark Matter.
Apple TV+

Apple TV+ isn’t the tiny streaming platform it used to be. Since its inception in 2019, the service has grown in popularity. Now home to Academy Award-winning films like CODA, Apple TV+ has enough movies and shows to keep you busy for a long time. It’s also our job to stay on top of the platform’s latest and greatest, which is why we’ve put together this rotating monthly roundup.

There’s plenty of new releases for May 2024, so without further ado, here’s everything you can look forward to in this final month of spring.

Our top picks for May

Dark Matter (2024)

tv-ma 1 Season
Genre Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Mystery
Cast Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga
Created by Blake Crouch
Apple TV+ is getting another exciting addition to its impressive sci-fi lineup with Dark Matter, an eight-episode series created by Blake Crouch, who also wrote the 2016 novel the show is based on. Starring Joel Edgerton as Chicago physicist Jason Dessen, the story follows Dessen’s pilgrimage through a never-ending vignette of alternate realities. They’re all different versions of his own life, and if he can’t break the spell, the real Jason could be lost forever. The first two episodes premiere on May 8, with one new episode releasing each Wednesday until June 19.

Hollywood Con Queen (2024)

tv-ma 1 Season
Genre Documentary
Based on journalist Scott Johnson’s painstaking research for The Hollywood Reporter, Hollywood Con Queen is a new three-part docuseries that chronicles one of the biggest fraud cases in showbiz. Posing as a powerful Hollywood producer, an aliased individual would lure aspiring artists to travel to Indonesia — all under the guise of “the opportunity of a lifetime.” But once the victims’ bank accounts dried up, this glorious “opportunity” just up and vanished. An adaptation of Johnson’s nonfiction novel Hollywood Con Queen: The Hunt for an Evil Genius, the docuseries is produced by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Chris Smith, a documentarian perhaps best known for a little show called Tiger King. The series premieres on May 8.

What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in May 2024

Netflix has generally weathered the aftermath of the 2023 Hollywood strikes better than its streaming rivals. However, Netflix's lineup in May looks significantly weaker than in the recent past. There's a distinct lack of blockbuster movies from other studios. Even Netflix's original series are slowing down this month. The most significant arrival is Bridgerton season 3, and Netflix is splitting that season into two parts, making fans wait until June to get some closure.

There are other highlights, including Jerry Seinfeld's Unfrosted, Blood of Zeus, and the complete run of the animated spy comedy Archer. But compared to the shows and movies that Netflix had earlier in 2024, it's really lackluster.
