Regal Cinemas owner confirms it will close all of its movie theaters again

UPDATE: Cineworld has confirmed the temporary closure of all 536 of its Regal theaters in the U.S., impacting around 40,000 jobs. The theaters will close their doors on Thursday, October 8, parent-company Cineworld said in a statement that cited pandemic-related issues as the cause. We’re still awaiting confirmation regarding Cineworld cinemas in the U.K. and Ireland. The original story appears below.

Regal Cinemas owner Cineworld is considering the temporary closure of all of its movie theaters in the U.S., U.K., and Ireland this week as it struggles to cope with dwindling audiences due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We can confirm we are considering the temporary closure of our U.K. and U.S. cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached,” the company said in a tweet posted on Sunday, October 4. “Once a decision has been made we will update all staff and customers as soon as we can.”

Prior to Cineworld’s announcement, multiple media reports over the weekend suggested the final straw for the company had been the decision to delay the release of the next James Bond movie, No Time to Die, until April 2021, due to the pandemic. Theaters will have been relying on the high-profile production to boost income at this challenging time.

Regal is the second-largest theater chain in the U.S. after AMC Theaters and operates around 7,076 screens at 536 sites in 42 states, while Cineworld runs around 128 theaters in the U.K. and Ireland. It’s not yet clear if all of the sites would close or just some, or when they would reopen.

Regal, along with AMC, closed its U.S. theaters in March 2020 as the pandemic began to take hold. Five months later, in August, the chains began to gradually reopen their locations. But with major studios continuing to play around with release dates, and the pandemic showing little sign of abating, a vicious cycle has developed where audiences won’t attend if there’s nothing new to see, and studios won’t release new movies until theaters stay open and audiences start returning.

Cineworld is expected to offer an update on the situation in the coming days.

If you’re continuing to steer clear of theaters for now, here are some ideas for what to watch this month on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Disney+.

Getting the family in the car and heading off to the drive-in to catch a movie might seem downright archaic in our 21st-Century, Netflix-dominated lives. But if Salt Lake City-based inventor Joe Livingston of Hitch Theaters has his way, drive-in movies might soon make a glorious comeback -- on the back of your car.

Livingston's portable projection screen, the Hitch Theater, can be set up using the hitch on your truck (thus the name), and a projector stand which is placed on the roof of the truck and projected onto the screen. Don't have a trailer hitch/ enough room in the truck bed for everybody? No problem: Hitch Theaters also sells a projector mount and screen mount that allow you to set it up just about anywhere.

Write a short essay to win this movie theater in Maine
Temple-Theater

After attempting to sell his two-screen, $350,000 theater through a traditional sale, owner of the Temple Theatre, Mike Hurley, has decided to take a more non-traditional approach to passing along the property to a new owner. Utilizing an essay contest, Hurley plans to give away the 400-seat theater to the person that writes the most convincing 250-word essay on why they should own the theater.

Of course, the owner isn't doing this for free. To submit an essay, anyone interested will also need to pay a $100 entry fee. Hurley is requiring a minimum of 3,500 entries before he will consider selling the theater. That would cover the original $350,000 purchase price and possibly add to the purchase price if additional entries are collected. If 3,500 entries aren't collected, Hurley plans on returning all the money to everyone that entered.

In response to the string of violent attacks at movie theaters nationwide recently, Regal Theaters will now be checking moviegoers' bags as an added precaution. Regal, which operates the largest theater chain in the U.S., announced the change this week.

"Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America," explained the movie theater chain on its website. "Regal Entertainment Group wants our customers and staff to feel comfortable and safe when visiting or working in our theaters. … We acknowledge that this procedure can cause some inconvenience and that it is not without flaws, but hope that these are minor in comparison to increased safety."
