The Everything Guide to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

When a game has the most successful first-day sales of any entertainment product in history, it’s pretty safe to assume that it’s all anyone’s going to be talking about the following weekend. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 did just that last week, so it should come as no surprise that we’re making it the focus of this week’s Everything Guide.

From movies and music, to parodies and other content found around the ‘net, here’s everything you need to make your Modern Warfare 3 experience as comprehensive as possible.

What to watch

Since Modern Warfare 3 is a direct sequel to its 2009 predecessor, there’s a good chance it’s been two years since you last got locked and loaded with Soap, Price and the rest of Task Force 141. If you’re looking to get back into the Modern Warfare mindset, you don’t need to play through the previous installments. You can just watch some of the cinema that inspired the series.

One of the most prominent examples of a film that influenced the tone and themes of the Modern Warfare franchise is 2001’s Blackhawk Down. Based on the real events chronicled in Mark Bowden’s book of the same name, Ridley Scott’s tense tale of U.S. soldiers fighting through a heavily armed enemy militia in Somalia earned rave reviews for its attention to detail and realistic portrayal of military action and strategy, and there’s been no shortage of comparisons to the storyline of Modern Warfare 1 & 2. As an added bonus, the presence of actors Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Eric Bana is likely to be a selling point for your significant other. (One piece of advice: Don’t let on that you’re watching the film as prep for your upcoming marathon gaming session.)

Still, you don’t need to pop in a movie to see the intersection of Hollywood and Modern Warfare, as there are a heap of well-known actors voicing characters in the franchise. Moving on, if you’ve been following the development of Modern Warfare 3 from the start, there’s very little chance you missed the awesome ads that hit the airwaves over the last month or so. In the rare event that you missed Sam Worthington and Jonah Hill profess their love for the series in “The Vet & The Noob,” make sure you check that one out – as well as the Jay Leno spoof that put The Tonight Show host in the middle of a MW3 skirmish.

You know a game’s gone mainstream when it hits the talk show monologues, eh?

Of course, as with any popular game release, there are a lot of Modern Warfare 3 parodies finding their way online, too. While most of them are forgettable, there are one or two out there that might prompt a chuckle. For example, here’s a Modern Warfare-themed spin on John Mayer’s song “Heartbreak Warfare” that seems to sum up the first week of MW3 mania pretty well:

What to listen to

When it came time to put together the Modern Warfare 3 score, Activision recruited popular composer Brian Tyler, who’s no stranger to military-themed projects. Along with composing the scores for The Expendables and Battle: Los Angeles, Tyler also created the musical element of 2008’s Rambo – so we’re pretty sure he knows how to capture the spirit of a battleground.

All 20 tracks of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 soundtrack are available on Amazon and iTunes, and just in case you needed any more reason to pick it up, Activision will donate all proceeds from the sale of the soundtrack to their “The Call of Duty Endowment” – a nonprofit charity that assists returning veterans in their transition back to civilian life.

What to read

Those who have only played the Modern Warfare games are missing some of the story. If you’re the sort who craves the complete history of Task Force 141, make sure to check out the Modern Warfare 2: Ghost comic book series published by DC Comics. The six-issue series was published in collected form last year, and is available as a digital-download via Comixology for the DC Comics app.

As the title implies, the series explores the history of the mysterious Task Force 141 member Ghost, and is set before he becomes a member of the team. Written by veteran comics scribe David Lapham, the series also reveals the origin of his skull-like mask and why he calls himself “Ghost.”

What to equip

Finally, if you’re looking for total immersion in the Modern Warfare 3 scene, there’s a good chance you’ve already got your hands on one of the official Xbox 360 Modern Warfare 3 controllers or wireless headsets. If not, well… we won’t tell anyone.

There’s also a wide range of Modern Warfare 3 clothing and other merch available around the ‘net for those rare moments when you leave your console and venture into the great outdoors over the coming weeks. Amazon has a nice selection of Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty goods – including a “Ghost”-style balaclava.

Personally, I’d opt for the understated-yet-awesome MW3 t-shirt, but that’s just my taste. (I wouldn’t turn that Modern Warfare 3 hoodie down, either.)

You have a lot of options if you want to experience Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023. It's actually possible to buy tickets to attend the event in person. But if you don't live near Cologne, Germany, you'll have to watch digitally. You'll be able to do so on Gamescom's or The Game Awards' official YouTube and Twitch channels. Activision Blizzard has fully pulled back the curtain on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III following an in-game event in its predecessor. This came alongside new gameplay that concludes by teasing a rebooted version of the series' infamous No Russian mission.
The gameplay trailer focuses on the campaign missions, which got a lot more detail in a post on the game's website. It affirms that the game follows Task Force 141 as they take on Vladimir Makarov and will feature some "Open Combat Missions" that give players multiple ways to complete objectives. The gameplay seems to mainly feature a stealthy run to one of these levels. Of course, the trailer's most shocking moment comes at the end.

We see Makarov text someone "No Russian," before they pull out a gun on a crowded plane. If you don't remember, No Russian was one of the original Modern Warfare II's most infamous missions, as it had players partake in a mass shooting terrorist attack at an airport with Russians. The level has influenced the tone of this rebooted Modern Warfare series, and it now looks like Modern Warfare III is set to reimagine this mission in some way, following up the Modern Warfare II post-credit scene that referenced it.

While the trailer focused on the campaign mainly, that post confirmed a lot of new info on multiplayer and Modern Warfare Zombies too. Its multiplayer features all 16 launch maps from 2009's Modern Warfare II, two larger Battle maps for Ground War and Invasion, and an even bigger War map for the return of the War Mode introduced in Call of Duty: WWII. Map voting returns, so you can have a say in where you want to play a match.  Finally, Activision says Modern Warfare Zombies takes place in a new open world where players will fight Dark Aether Zombies, complete missions, and incorporate Extraction game elements. 
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III launches on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 10.

Activision teases Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III’s biggest improvements

Activision has just teased lots of new details about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, which launches this November. That includes the fact that the game will contain a Zombies mode, more open-ended campaign missions, and introduce a new "Call of Duty HQ" that will serve as a hub for all future Call of Duty games.

These details were all revealed in a new blog post posted on the series' website ahead of the in-game event that will give us our first in-depth look at Modern Warfare II. In it, Activision clears up a lot of rumors about the game to try and show that Modern Warfare III is still an "incredible, premium annual game experience across Campaign, Multiplayer and Co-operative modes" despite reportedly starting development as a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II expansion.
Some of the features listed we already knew about, like the fact that this year's campaign features Makarov as a villain and that players can carry over their progression and inventory from Modern Warfare II. Others are new, though, like the fact that the campaign will feature new "Open Combat" missions. That seems to imply that Modern Warfare III's campaign levels will offer more freedom than is typical in a Call of Duty level. When it comes to multiplayer, the post states that players can expect new combat vest, perk, tac-stance movement, and after-market parts systems in addition to some Riochet Anti-Cheat Improvements.
More importantly, it's finally officially confirmed that this year's game will feature a Zombies mode. Titled Modern Warfare Zombies, Activision calls it the "largest Zombies offering to date." Finally, Activision made it clear that it plans on keeping all Call of Duty content closely bundled together going forward. After Modern Warfare III launches, Call of Duty HQ will be introduced and serve as "one access point for your future Call of Duty content."
While there aren't many specifics on all of these things, we at least now have a broader picture of what to expect from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III when it launches on November 10.
