Telltale strikes off on its own with original IP

Telltale Games, noted for its episodic adventure series set in the worlds of popular franchises like The Walking Dead and Borderlands, is developing new, announced partnerships along with some original content of its own. The information comes as part of an announcement that CEO Dan Connors will be stepping into an advisory role with the company while president and fellow co-founder Kevin Bruner assumes the mantle of CEO.

A big part of Telltale’s success has been its ability to adapt its own voice and style to those of the properties it licenses, showing an impressive range as its series’ have diversified. Developing original IP represents a major shift for Telltale, giving free, creative reign to the storytelling skills honed over the last decade of episodic games based on franchises ranging from Jurassic Park and Back to the Future to Homestar Runner and Monkey Island. The studio is currently releasing Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones, and it recently announced a partnership with Mojang to develop a Minecraft episodic adventure.

“We’re thrilled to continue our growth and bring our unique style of scripted entertainment to the next generation of digital media, and do that across thousands of different devices,” explained incoming CEO Bruner about the company’s changes. “Our top priority is to continue fostering an environment where the most talented and creative storytellers in the industry are working side by side with the world’s biggest creative partners. We’re already working on some of the biggest franchises in entertainment, and when you add our unannounced partnerships and upcoming original IP, it’s clear the most exciting time to be at Telltale is now, and there will continue to be more and more opportunity to innovate ahead of us.”

There are no further hints about either the original IP or the unannounced partnerships. One thought for a licensed series, based on nothing but wild speculation and optimistic fanboyism, would be Adult Swim’s razor-sharp Johnny Quest parody, The Venture Brothers, which is returning soon for an hour-long, standalone special. Brock Sampson (voiced by Patrick Warburton) was a player in Telltale’s Poker Night 2 in 2013, which also featured Borderlands’ Claptrap well prior to announcing Tales from the Borderlands.
