You can now share Spotify songs directly through Facebook Messenger

The list of things you can’t do with Facebook Messenger appears to be growing shorter by the day. It’s not enough to just talk to your friends anymore via the app — now, you have to also be able to control the rest of your life through Messenger as well. And the latest service to jump on board is Spotify, whose new integration with the social media platform will allow users to share songs or playlists directly within Messenger. Simply go to the “more” tab in the Facebook app, and send your favorite tunes to your favorite people.

Those on the receiving end of the music will be able to click directly on the link, whereupon they’ll be taken to the Spotify app for instant playback (assuming that they have the app installed, that is). The latest feature is supported by both iOS and Android, so no matter which side of the smartphone fence you’re on, this announcement is for you.

The Spotify partnership is the latest in a series of features Facebook has rolled out for its insanely popular messaging system — earlier, it announced a partnership with Uber that would allow you to order a car from within the Messenger app (because apparently, it would be just too difficult to close out of one app and open another).

Messenger has also added a number of more messaging-specific bells and whistles, like the ability to share GIFs and stickers with your friends. Already, Facebook’s standalone app has garnered more than 800 million monthly active users, putting it on target to compete with some of the biggest players in the space. And with rumors of a desktop app, there’s no telling what’s next for Facebook Messenger.

So for now, Messenger is tapping into Spotify’s 75-million-strong user base to further boost engagement, but the sky seems to be the limit for this particular offshoot of the Zuckerberg empire.

Helium Mobile $20/month plan banner showing a happy woman against a pink background.

Nova Labs, the company that pioneered the “people-powered” Helium Network, has just announced a wallet-friendly new plan under its Helium Mobile brand that offers unlimited data, talk, and text for only $20 a month.

The no-contract plan provides nationwide 5G access primarily through its own Helium Mobile Network that’s backed up by “the nation’s largest 5G network” — T-Mobile. This allows the carrier to provide full 5G coverage at much more affordable prices than traditional carriers and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs).

WhatsApp used to be one of my favorite apps. Now, I can’t stand it
WhatsApp logo on a phone held in hand.

For the best part of the last decade, WhatsApp has been my primary means to stay in touch with friends, family, peers at work, and even strangers. Texting is not as prevalent in my country, India, as it is in the U.S. for reasons such as the sheer dominance of Android users (as well as the diminutive share of iOS, and therefore, iMessage users), capped carrier costs for SMS-based messaging, and the poor understanding of RCS.

WhatsApp, on the other hand, is more widely used here than any other communication medium, primarily because it's free and allows the exchange of a multitude of types of media without being limited by national borders. People of all ages use and love it -- and they collectively send enough messages to clog up the internet.
