Spartans! Assassin’s Creed Odyssey sails to Greece

Ubisoft has officially announced Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and the game will be coming to E3.

A five-second video posted on the game’s official Twitter page shows a character kicked off a cliff into the ocean, and it appears to be a Spartan soldier doing the kicking.

We weren’t sure Ubisoft would be bringing a new Assassin’s Creed game to E3 this year, as the company’s 2017 release Assassin’s Creed Origins had continued to be updated with new paid and free content, but the company’s hand was forced. A keychain, of all things, appears to have revealed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey before Ubisoft had the chance.

French site JeuxVideo-Live was sent an image of a “collectible helmet keychain” with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey written at the top of the package. The helmet appears to be that of a Spartan from Ancient Greece. This is consistent with the name Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, as Homer’s epic The Odyssey chronicled hero Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca after the end of the Trojan War.

Rumors have swirled regarding Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in the past, claiming the game would feature two playable characters, the return of naval exploration and the Brotherhood system, and fights against mythical beasts. Among other things, a rumor also claimed the game would see Aya and Bayek return in some capacity and it would release this holiday season.

The mythical beasts would seem strange in most Assassin’s Creed games, but we saw them included briefly in the main Origins campaign during a drug-induced trip, as well as in one of its expansion packs. Leaning into this for Greek mythology makes sense, especially with God of War moving onto Nordic monsters.

An Assassin’s Creed game was included on a Walmart Canada listing that has already accurately predicted Rage 2 and Lego DC Super-Villains. Also included on that listing was an untitled Splinter Cell sequel, and though it’s still very possible the game shows up at E3, we probably won’t be playing it this year.

We’re looking forward to hearing more about the next chapter of Assassin’s Creed at Ubisoft’s E3 press conference. The event will also show off The Division 2, as well as the pirate-themed Skull & Bones. We’re also hoping to get another good look at the long-awaited Beyond Good & Evil 2.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is coming out earlier than expected

Ubisoft revealed that Assassin's Creed Mirage will now release on October 5, a week earlier than originally intended.

Assassin's Creed Mirage is supposed to be a back-to-basics entry for Ubisoft's long-running action-adventure series. It was announced in 2022 and got an October 12 release date during the PlayStation Showcase in May. Now, just two months before the game was set to release, Ubisoft announced that it has moved the release of Assassin's Creed Mirage up by one week to October 5. This coincides with a tweet announcing that the game had "gone gold," which essentially means that development of the game is complete and Ubisoft's focus can turn to post-launch support.

Delays are very common in this industry, and Ubisoft especially is no stranger to them; Skull & Bones is a prime example. That's why Assassin's Creed Mirage joins a rare group of games that actually come out earlier than originally expected. In 2022, we saw Xenoblade Chronicles 3 moved from September to July, while this year, Baldur's Gate 3's PC launch moved up from August 31 to August 3, which ended up being a much better release window for the game.
Although Ubisoft did not specifically state the reason for moving Assassin's Creed Mirage up, it wouldn't be surprising if the company wanted to give the game more space and attention ahead of other games coming out this October, like Forza Motorsport, Alan Wake 2, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Regardless, it's going to kick off one of the busiest months for game releases in 2023.

Ubisoft showed off three new Assassin’s Creed games -- Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Jade, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage -- at the June 2023 Ubisoft Forward event.

Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR will release on Meta Quest 2, and players can play as three characters: Ezio, Cassandra, and Connor. Players can block, parry, counterattack, and duel with enemies in VR. There are also a variety of different weapons to choose from, such as hidden blades, swords, tomahawks, bows, crossbows, and throwing knives. The game will also feature comfort settings, like peripheral vision blocking and teleportation to mitigate nausea, vertigo, and fear of heights. It will release sometime during holiday 2023.
