“Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbum claims Sony officials told the paper that the PS3 will go on sale in Japan with a launch price of “less than 50,000 yen” – approximately $465 or UKP 255 at current exchange rates.
Last year industry analysts Wedbush Morgan Securities suggested a PS3 price point of $500, arguing that added media functions – such as TiVO-style capabilities and a DVD burner – could push up the cost. However, Sony did not announce any such functions when it revealed the PS3 specs list on Monday. ”

I think we can safely say that the Playstation 3 is definately targeting an older audience. But if Sony plays their cards right and market the new console as more than just a gaming system, perhaps as a DVD player, computer replacement or the sorts, then perhaps parents are more likely to swallow the high price. We expect the Microsoft Xbox 360 to cost considerably less.
We have also heard rumors that Sony may introduce multiple variations of their Playstation 3, all with different hardware specs (with the gaming hardware being the same) and different price points.
