Microsoft Manager Claims Windows 7 was Inspired by OS X

apple-v-microsoftA Microsoft advertising executive, speaking with the site PCR, went on record to say that he believed Windows 7’s design to be inspired by OS X. Now Microsoft is refuting the quote, which seems bound to wind up in the latest round of “Get a Mac” commercials.

In the interview with PCR, Simon Aldous, Microsoft’s Partner Group Manager is asked, “Is Windows 7 really a much more agile operating system, in terms of the specific uses it can be moulded to?”

He replies:

Mac OS X 10.6.2 Update Released Today

Mac-OS-X-10.6-Snow-LeopardApple released a relatively important update today, 10.6.2 for Snow Leopard. Among the numerous fixes, the update now addresses data loss from the system when using a guest account. There are several upset users on the net reporting that the bug caused people to log out unexpectedly, search results not showing Exchange contacts and even video playback performance issues. The list below shows a number of serious issues that are hopefully now resolved.

Apple unfortunately has not added Intel Atom support for those of you planning on adding OS X to a non-Apple system (you know who you are).

Apple to End OS X Intel Atom Support to Block Hackintosh Community

mac-intelApple is in a constant battle with unlockers in the form of both independent enthusiasts and rival companies. It recently succeeded in killing iPhone jailbreaking for the time being and cutting off the Palm Pre from iTunes. However, to its dismay, Psystar is selling a software hack to trick Apple’s Snow Leopard OS into being easily installed on PCs.

Now, Apple is reportedly preparing a new release of OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.2) to try to kill a growing section of the Hackintosh community.

Windows 7 slide show from the ad

The panel discusses Microsoft’s Windows 7 launch: thoughts on how the new operating system was executed and if it generated a new buzz and respect for the company.  Moreover, we talk about how we think Microsoft’s adorable ads of young Kylie making a slide show using Windows 7 gave a softer, simpler perspective of the new operating system. Also, the podcast panel talks about how the ad war between Apple and Microsoft is no longer a cold war anymore.

Psystar’s Rebel EFI Offers to Put Snow Leopard on Everyday PCs

Florida’s Psystar is mired in an increasingly preposterous legal battle with Apple over marketing Mac clones. Apple sued Psystar, Psystar sued Apple (that was eventually thrown out, and the company appears to have applied for bankruptcy protection while it gets ready to go to court. Psystar might be back on its heels, but that doesn’t mean the company is ceasing to innovate! Psystar is now offering Rebel EFI, a $50 application that enables “smooth interfacing between operating systems and generic Intel hardware.” In practical terms, that means it enables users to install Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware…an action Apple is likely to view as a violation of Mac OS X’s license agreement.

Will Windows 7 Kick Apple’s Butt?

Windows 7

I’ve been a part of every Windows launch since Windows 95. That launch still remains the historic high point of Microsoft and Windows, even though Windows 95 wasn’t exactly a perfect product. Apple, which was struggling through a series of rather clueless CEOs at the time, was less hurt by Windows 95 than its own inability to focus and execute. It’s an error that wouldn’t be corrected until Steve Jobs got back and fixed things.

Apple Releases Upgrades for Most of Its Big Cats

Snow LeopardCriticized by consumers and the media alike for using an outdated version of Adobe flash player in the recently released Snow Leopard operating system, Apple has released updates for both Tiger and Leopard OS’s.

Apple stated that multiple issues existed in the Adobe Flash Player plug-in, the most serious of which could have lead to arbitrary code execution when viewing a “maliciously crafted web site.” Snow Leopard’s first update packaged nine patches for Flash player vulnerabilities alone. The 75.1MB update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and is now available via Software Update preferences, or from Apple Downloads.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard Review

Mac OS X Snow Leopard Packaging

The Macintosh faithful are all abuzz with the debut of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Apple’s latest and greatest operating system for Macintosh computers. However, unlike its “big cat” predecessors (like Leopard, Tiger, and Panther) Snow Leopard isn’t awash in splashy new features or new ideological paradigms meant to advance the computing experience – and knock Redmond back on its heels. Instead, Apple took a breath with Snow Leopard and focused on refining its Mac OS X operating system, taking the time to get lots of details right, improve performance, and make a bunch of under-the-hood changes that will benefit Macintosh users in the long run. Improvements to the OS are highly visible in a few places, show up in a lot of little areas, and amount to an upgrade greater than the sum of its parts. The enhancements in Snow Leopard become starkly apparent when one goes back to Leopard or Tiger. After using Snow Leopard, they seem clunky and slipshod, where Snow Leopard hums along and does things right.
