Nintendo’s E3 2009 Press Conference Wrap Up

Nintendo

We just emerged from a colorful light storm at the cavernous Club Nokia, where Nintendo has lifted the veil on not just new games, but new hardware as well. Here’s a rundown of what the company revealed:

While Microsoft hopes to eventually steamroll the Wii remote with Project Natal, Nintendo doesn’t plan to go quietly. The company revealed more details on its Wii MotionPlus controllers, which originally debuted at last year’s E3 but are now ready for production. The subtle expansion will add more precise motion to the controllers for an upcoming crop of games that will take advantage of the tech, from shooting arrows in Wii Sports Resort to slashing baddies in Red Steel 2. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 will also take advantage of the new tech, as will Grand Slam Tennis and Sega’s Virtua Tennis 2009.

Though most of the titles to show up at this year’s E3 will hit physical shelves in cardboard boxes any number of months later, Electronic Arts has decided to dip its toe into a Web 2.0 model of distribution on one title: Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online will allow users to pay for their gaming experience monthly and play through a browser, rather than buying a disc and installing it.

The company announced the rather unusual distribution model for its title – which calls to mind Quake Live – on Friday, amid news of its other more conventional releases.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — There’s nothing all that charming about Nintendo’s latest gadget.

It’s not as zany as a zapper or as sexy as a steering wheel. It doesn’t even tell you whether you’re losing weight. However, the gamemaker is hoping a small cube-shaped device called Wii MotionPlus will take the Wii’s motion-sensing controls to a new level of precision.

It’s no secret the wrist-flicking Wii Remote’s lack of accuracy has long been the console’s clunky downfall. The Wii MotionPlus, available beginning June 8, successfully defeats that dilemma by using gyroscopic sensors to exactly mimic gamers’ hand movements, making such activities as sword fighting, disc throwing and golfing look seamless on screen.

Electronic Arts has announced it has pushed forward the launch of its Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and Grand Slam Tennis titles for the Nintendo Wii to June 8, corresponding with the launch of the new Wii MotionPlus controller accessor. The Wii version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 will be packaged with the MotionPlus in the North America and Europe, while Grand Slam Tennis for the Wii will be packaged with the MotionPlus accessory in Europe only.

Video game franchises like Madden Football, FIFA Soccer and Tiger Woods PGA Tour may be building blocks of EA’s sports video game empire, but the company will tweak the tried-and-true formula for these mainstay titles when it brings them to the Nintendo Wii for 2008. EA announced on Thursday that five of its popular sporting titles would fall into the newly created “All-Play” line on the Wii, a label created for easy-to-play sports titles.

EA Launches Boom Blox, Freestyle Label

Electronic Arts has announced that it has shipped its first Steven Spielberg-designed game, Boom Blox. Available for the Nintendo Wii console, the game is intended to be a fun, action-packed game that appeals to both the 8–12 year-old set as well as the entire family: players navigate their way through nearly 400 levels of block destruction, encountering kooky characters along the way. The game also includes a level editor so users can create their own Boom Blox levels and share them with friends and family vi WiiConnect24.

Microsoft, EA Ink Game Advertising Deal

Microsoft, EA Ink Game Advertising Deal

One the heels of last week’s odd executive swap which saw a former EA leader take over Xbox and Games for Windows businesses and Xbox head Peter Moore depart for EA Sports, Microsoft has inked a deal with leading video game publisher Electronic Arts which brings five of EA’s leading sports titles into Microsoft’s in-game advertising service, Massive Network. The move could be a significant victory for Microsoft in the still-nascent game advertising business, giving the company a significant leg up over Google and other rivals—especially since one of the EA titles included in the deal is the perennial best-seller Madden NFL. Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.

The list of games Microsoft will cover includes:

Nintendo Pumps Q1 Wii Lineup

By most accounts, Nintendo’s only failure with the Wii console this holiday season was not being able to get enough units to Wii-hungry retailers. Now, the company wants to keep Wii enthusiasm afloat, so it’s announced a series of new and classic gaming titles which are due to become available for the Wii during the first quarter of 2007.

“Our tremendous worldwide launch shows people, from experienced players to non-players, are hungry for the kinds of entertainment only Wii provides,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo America. “Wii hardware production continues full bore, and every week we’re delivering more incredible content to further expand the experience.”
