Windows 11 Phone Link is a full redesign of Your Phone app

Microsoft has announced a rebranding of its Your Phone app to the name Phone Link, alongside the latest Windows 11 update.

With the new name comes a redesign of the Phone Link app, with new controls, colors, icons, and illustrations to go along with the Windows 11 update.

Microsoft has also introduced a new setup method, which allows users to scan a QR code from their phones to pair the feature. The Android companion app has also been renamed Link to Windows, which can still be downloaded in the Google Play Store. Both the Windows 11 and Android apps will have the same icon for easy identification.

Microsoft has now announced its plans to partner with the brand Honor to bring Phone Link to devices in China. Some models include the Honor Magic V, the Honor Magic 4 series, and the Honor Magic 3 series devices. Microsoft promises compatibility with more Android devices in the future.

First introduced over three years ago, Your Phone has been an option for accessing your phone’s functions directly from your computer. First, it was limited to just photos and texts, but later came notifications, phone calls, and other app integrations.

The partnership started with Microsoft’s own Surface Duo phone but more recently has extended to the most popular Android company, Samsung. Samsung announced its partnership to bring the feature to the Galaxy S22 series in February. As part of that collaboration, Samsung models including the Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy S series, and the Galaxy Note series are also compatible with Your Phone, now known as Phone Link.

The Phone Link rebrand is just one spotlighted feature Microsoft has confirmed ahead of its April 5 event, which is expected to showcase more new developments in Windows 11 in addition to more of the brand’s software. The event is expected to have a productivity focus, with word that Microsoft will likely discuss updates to its Microsoft Edge browser, Microsoft Teams, as well as other Microsoft 365 applications.

The next Windows 11 update may seriously slow down your SSD

Microsoft may be rolling out a new feature as part of the latest Windows 11 update that will boost security but slow down SSD performance. We're talking about BitLocker, of course, a device encryption feature that will be turned on by default as part of the upcoming 24H2 update.

In the past, BitLocker encryption was available only on Windows Pro editions, but the new update lowers the eligibility criteria, extending encryption capabilities to a broader range of devices.

You definitely want to install these 90 Windows security patches

Microsoft has issued security updates to address 90 vulnerabilities, some of which hackers are actively exploiting, in a blog post yesterday. These flaws allow hackers to bypass security features and gain unauthorized access to your PC's system, highlighting the need to keep your Windows computer updated.

Nine are rated Critical, 80 of the flaws are rated Important, and only one is rated Moderate in severity. In addition, the software giant has patched 36 vulnerabilities in its Edge browser in the past month to avoid issues with its browser. Users will be happy to know that the patches are for six actively exploited zero-days, including CVE-2024-38213. This lets attackers bypass SmartScreen protections but requires the user to open a malicious file. TrendMicro's Peter Girnus, who discovered and reported the flaw, proposed it could be a workaround for CVE-2023-36025 or CVE-2024-21412 that DarkGate malware operators misused.

Windows is getting its own version of AirDrop

As spotted by Windows Central, a Microsoft support document has been updated to include details on a new file-sharing feature for Windows and Android devices. Thanks to Phone Link and the Link to Windows Android app, users will be able to share files through the native share menus on their devices, creating an experience not unlike Apple's well-loved AirDrop. It seems the feature is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders and should be available to the public soon.

AirDrop has long been the king of file-sharing features, and so far, Microsoft and other companies have struggled to compete. If this new feature is as easy to use as it looks and succeeds at least most of the time, it's sure to be a hit.
