Leaked story and art details for Destiny describe Bungie’s post-Halo universe

Bungie MMO

Read our full Destiny review.

It’s been months since we last heard about Halo-creator Bungie’s upcoming shooter MMO called Destiny. While the studio’s contract with Activision revealed many details about which platforms the shooter series would be available for over what period of time, little’s known about the game’s look or story. A new leak out of the studio sheds some light on just what Destiny is.

IGN received documents and concept art for the game from an unnamed reader on Tuesday. A synopsis of Destiny’s story shows that Bungie isn’t straying too far from its science fiction roots, with a tale about humanity’s future not unlike the one in Halo.

“Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age. A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ‘ knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and—eventually—overcoming it.”

In addition to the concept art image (officially released by Bungie) above that presumably depicts one of these knights protecting the last of mankind are other images, one of which appears to show the underside of the massive ship hovering above the Earth, which is referred to elsewhere in the documents as “The Traveler.”

Destiny has been described as an MMO in the past and the leaked document goes on to describe a game that’s “social at its core” as well as one that’s “fun and accessible to all.” Bungie’s co-founder is quoted saying, “Destiny is designed for your inner seven year old. We want to make it feel like a mythic adventure.”

The logo for the game appears alongside the logos for both Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. Bungie’s contract with Activision leaked in May described the first installment in a four game series as an Xbox exclusive due in 2013. The first Destiny would be for both the Xbox 360 and Durango/Xbox 720 with PC and PlayStation 4 versions to follow. This new document suggests that Bungie and Activision have altered their plans.

Bungie responded to the leak, saying, “We’re not quite ready to take the wraps off our next universe, but in light of recent events we thought we’d give fans something a little more official over at Bungie.net. Feel free to drop by and say hello! There’s much more to come.”
