They have highs, lows, and lots of gripping scenes, from choreographed fights to car chases. The good guys usually, though not always, win. This genre has created some of the most memorable and enduring characters ever, from Mission: Impossible’s Ethan Hunt to John Wick’s title character.

Sicario (2015)

Sicario (2015 Movie - Emily Blunt) Official Trailer – “Hitman”

Intense through its entire two-hour run, Sicario is a gripping action thriller that brings you along for the ride with FBI special agent Kate Macer (The Fall Guy‘s Emily Blunt), who has the monumental task of taking down the leader of a powerful Mexican drug cartel. But as she heads out on a mission with a special CIA task force, she realizes that this might be an even deeper and more dangerous undertaking than it seemed.

Earning three Academy Award nominations, Sicario has every element you could possibly ask for in a great action movie. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem | Official Trailer (2023 Movie) - Seth Rogen

A fun action movie to watch with the kids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem shows that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg can do more than just raunchy potty humor. The superhero movie centers around the popular crime-fighting turtles and follows the origins of their mutation into human/turtle hybrid creatures. Trained in the art of ninjutsu, they live in the sewers beneath the fast-paced world until, one day, they emerge among humans and fashion themselves heroes.

With a talented ensemble voice cast that includes Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph, John Cena, Rose Byrne, Giancarlo Esposito, Paul Rudd, and Rogen himself, among others, kids will love the fun cameo from MrBeast as well. Our reviewer calls the movie a “charming reboot” and an “infectiously funny coming-of-age adventure.”

Fast X (2023)

FAST X | Official Trailer

Somehow, no matter how many times he reappears, seeing Vin Diesel take down enemies in fast cars as Dominic Toretto never gets old. Can you believe that Fast X, as the name implies, is the 10th main entry in this action film franchise? Set on the cobblestone roads of Rome, Dominic’s team is tasked with retrieving a computer chip, and he hopes to delegate the job to others while he remains at home with his wife and son. But, of course, Dominic gets roped into the dangerous situation. With a mission to accomplish, enemies looking to square up old vendettas, and the reveal that the mission might not be what it seems, the team springs into action.

Fast X offers up all the usual fun you expect from this franchise, from crazy car chase scenes to brawny fights. But it’s oh so entertaining. DT’s reviewer singles out Jason Momoa’s villainous character Dante Reyes as a highlight, along with the way the team behind this franchise has “found more clever ways to stage vehicular warfare.”

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (November 2024)
Mark Wahlberg in Infinite.

Amazon Prime Video is turning over a new leaf in November. Or at least turning over its movie library. Many movies left Prime Video at the end of October, but new additions have arrived, including The Godfather, one of the all-time classics. Meanwhile, Infinite, a little-seen action film starring Mark Wahlberg, has suddenly found its audience on Prime Video. It's been the No. 1 movie on the streamer for almost two weeks now, which is impressive for a film that skipped theaters. Usually, it's Netflix that makes random action flicks into hits.

Last week's additions, Canary Black and Monkey Man, are still streaming for the action fans in your life. But if you still want some scares after Halloween, Terrifier 2, Constantine, and 10 Cloverfield Lane are sticking around through the end of the month. You can find these films and more among the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now. We update this list every Friday morning so you can stay on top of the newest arrivals.
