The best new shows to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max (HBO), and more

The cast of Evil.
Paramount+

Memorial Day weekend (and holiday weekends in general) tends to be even quieter than usual for the major streamers. Thankfully, Paramount+ and Apple TV+ are keeping things fresh with a pair of shows that are entering their fourth seasons: Evil and Trying. The former is a religious-based X-Files-like horror series with a dedicated fan base, while the latter is an underrated British dramady about a couple who want a family more than anything else in the world.

There aren’t many more new shows coming down the runway before the end of May, but the beginning of June means that summer shows like House of the Dragon and The Boys are right around the corner. In the meantime, our complete list of the best new shows to stream is below.

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, Disney+, Paramount+, Peacock, and Apple TV+ all have one thing in common: They’re more expensive than they used to be! We can live with higher rates as long as new shows keep coming, but during light weeks like this one, it’s always a good idea to consider signing up for the ad-supported tiers, which are worth it if you can sit through a few commercials. If it can save you some money on your streaming bill, it’s worth it.

When you’re done here, check out the best new movies to stream this week, as well as the best shows on Netflix, best shows on Hulu, best shows on Amazon Prime Video, and best shows on Disney+.

Things are getting extremely personal for Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) in the fourth and final season of Evil. For the last three seasons, Kristen has worked alongside Father David Acosta (Mike Colter) and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) to investigate supernatural occurrences on behalf of the Catholic Church despite the fact that Kristen and Ben are both skeptics. And Sister Andrea (Andrea Martin) has since joined the team as well.

Now, Kristen’s nemesis, Dr. Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson), has some very dark plans for her frozen eggs as part of a conspiracy with Kristen’s own mother, Sheryl (Christine Lahti). Their shared ambition may be crazy, but if there’s one thing that’s real in this show, it’s evil.

There must be a rule among streamers that each outlet needs a certain allotment of British TV series. Trying is one Apple TV+’s imports from the U.K., and it revolves around Jason Ross (Rafe Spall) and Nikki Newman (Esther Smith), a couple who desperately wanted to have a baby together. And when that didn’t work out, they decided to adopt.

During the third season, Jason and Nikki fought to adopt a pair of siblings, Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and Tyler (Cooper Turner). They won that battle, but there are more challenges ahead in the newly released fourth season that may fray the fragile bonds between the kids and their adoptive parents.

Things slip into sci-fi territory when Royal discovers that there’s an enigmatic black void on his land. From there, the present and the future collide in ways that Royal doesn’t fully understand.

As season 2 arrives, Royal just wants to keep his family together now that he’s finally realized who Autumn (Imogen Poots) really is. But as the mystery of the void deepens, Royal may not be able to hold on to the ones that he loves.

Through the first two seasons of Bridgerton, Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) believed that love had simply passed her by. But this season, Penelope moves from a supporting role into a romantic lead when Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) reenters her orbit.

Colin thoughtlessly insulted Penelope last season, and he nearly lost her as a friend. Now, more than anything else, he just wants to win back her affection. But as Colin earns Penelope’s forgiveness, they start feeling a mutual attraction that neither one of them believed would ever happen. However, since this is still Bridgerton, complications will inevitably arise that may keep them from finding love with each other.

However, Edwin and Charles shouldn’t assume that they’re immune to injury just because they’re dead. If you’ve ever loved or cared for someone else, then you know that there are plenty of other ways to be hurt.

Disney+ and BBC are really pushing the idea that Doctor Who season 14 is somehow not the same revival show that’s been continuing since 2005. Rest assured, that this is not a reboot and it is simply the beginning of a new Doctor’s era, with Ncuti Gatwa in the lead role.

The Doctor is an alien Time Lord with a time machine that looks like a British police box on the outside, while it’s infinitely larger on the inside. For over 60 years, viewers have watched the Doctor go from planet to planet and from time period to time period on wild misadventures with his human companions. Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) is the latest young woman to accept the Doctor’s invitation to travel in time and space. And she really doesn’t know what she’s in for.

Although Cam is wary of Rebecca’s intentions, she can get the girls accused of murdering Reena to open up. And what these children have to say stuns both Rebecca and Cam.

Last season on Hacks, the show challenged its own premise by letting Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) complete her comeback as a comedian … followed by Deborah promptly firing Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the much younger comedy writer who helped Deborah reclaim her career. Deborah may have acted with good intentions to propel Ava forward, but it seemed like the show would have a difficult time getting them back together again.

Hacks season 3 comes up with a new reason for Deborah and Ava to collaborate, even if both of them are falling back into familiar patterns to do so. The dynamics have changed because Ava has now found some success of her own. But Ava’s decision to come back to Deborah won’t always have the best outcome for either woman.

Conan O’Brien may be done with late-night comedy, but he’s far from finished with TV. His new series, Conan O’Brien Must Go, is a comedy and travel show that brings O’Brien to Norway, Thailand, Argentina, and Ireland. It’s also partially a sequel to O’Brien’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, as he reconnects with the fans he met on that series.

As always with O’Brien, most of the jokes are at his own expense. But there are occasionally moving moments, including the parts of the fourth episode where O’Brien looks into his own family’s Irish heritage.

3 best rom-coms of 2023 so far
Two men are covered in cake in Red, White & Royal Blue.

The romantic comedy is not what it used to be. The genre used to be a regular feature at the box office, and we could almost always count on getting at least one good one a year.

While that may no longer be the case, that doesn’t mean that the genre is totally dead, as 2023 has produced a couple of well-above-average rom-coms. We highlight the three best from the year so far below:
