Amazon Prime's unlimited photo storage just became shareable — and searchable

Amazon Prime’s unlimited photo storage just got even more unlimited — today, the online retailer announced the Family Vault, which allows Prime members to share that unlimited photo storage with up to five people.

The new feature is designed to help families share and easily access images, so relatives of Prime members can now easily order prints from Amazon’s new photo printing service, for example. Moreover, individuals with shared access aren’t limited to downloading the stored images, but can upload their own images for sharing or simply safeguarding.

The unlimited photo storage heads to Prime members with no additional cost and also includes 5GB of video and non-photo file storage. The platform can be used by uploading shots individually, or by setting up automatic backups to safeguard images in the event of a hard drive failure.

The new photo storage also introduces a search engine that can find the objects and people shown in the photographs, using the image itself and not user-added keywords. According to Amazon, the updated photo storage platform now allows Prime members to search by person as well as by typing in keywords like “sunset” or “wedding” when looking for a certain shot. Along with the new facial detection and object recognition, images can also be searched by date and location.

“Prime members love the benefit of unlimited photo storage but often struggle to collect and organize photos across multiple devices and accounts into a single, shareable archive,” said Amazon Prime Photos Director David Nenke. “We launched the Family Vault to make it easy for family members to safely store and share all their favorite moments.”

The update also brings integration with the photo printing service Amazon launched last month, making it easier for Prime members to order prints and photobooks directly from their Prime Photos account, with free shipping.

Amazon Prime may be based on free two-day shipping, but the expanded photo storage tools could be a big perk for members, since high resolution images can be stored uncompressed and the photos are now easier to share and search. The upgraded photo storage joins Amazon Primes video and music streaming options as part of the $99 annual subscription.

An Early Glimpse of the Lord of the Rings TV series.

In 2017, Amazon struck a blockbuster deal to bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved epic, The Lord of the Rings, to Prime Video as an original series. It's been a long and winding road, with a few COVID-related delays along the way. However, the first season has finally wrapped filming and Prime Video has set a date for the series premiere: September 2, 2022.

“I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth!," said Amazon Studios Head Jennifer Salke. "Our talented producers, cast, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this untold and awe-inspiring vision to life.”

26% of all Americans will shop Amazon Prime Day deals, data reveals

America is shopping again, and Prime Day could be the best day to do it. This year, with the pandemic waning, consumer spending is up more than 10%, with many folks looking to Prime Day deals as the perfect way to get way more for way less. The newest research from Finder’s Amazon Prime Day Shopping Report estimates that 26% of all American adults, that’s a whopping 67.7 million people, are planning to shop Amazon Prime Day sales. People will rush to the world’s biggest retail site to take advantage of sales on its biggest day — will you be one of them?

There’s a reason more than a quarter of the population will be taking advantage of sales on Amazon Prime Day — they are often wider and deeper than the sales we see on any other day of the year. The same survey, which was taken nationally, with over 2000 Americans taking part, revealed that 11% plan on buying an Amazon product or service, with 1% intending to go for both! Furthermore, 8% say that they will be buying one of Amazon’s tech products, like an Amazon Echo smart speaker, or a Kindle Paperwhite. That means that you’re far from alone if you’ve been waiting for Prime Day with an eye on some great new tech, or to upgrade your Amazon Prime services.
