How to convert a PDF file into a Word file

There’s a lot to love about PDFs – they’re compatible with almost any system, they don’t take up a lot of space, and they can’t be easily edited or changed. This is great when you’re trying to send out a form or rules for a game, but sometimes you really need to make a few changes without going back to the source document. Thankfully, there are a couple of easy ways to convert your PDFs into easy to update word documents before saving and redistributing them.

With Adobe Acrobat

*Note: you’ll need the paid version of Acrobat to use this method. They offer a free 30-day trial of the software, but if you need to make the conversion on a regular basis, you’ll want to pay for the full version or read below for other options.

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Under the Tools menu, hover over Content Editing, then select Convert File to Microsoft Word Document.
  3. If your PDF contains scanned text, instead of text you can highlight and copy, turn off Optical Character Recognition under settings if you want it to skip over the scanned text.
  4. Pick a name and save location for your file, and hit save.

Without Adobe Acrobat

If you don’t want to pay for the full version of Acrobat, you can also use an online tool to convert the files for you. While these sites process thousands of files and are fairly trustworthy, it’s probably still not a great idea to have it convert files with sensitive information, since it’s not clear how long these files stay available on their servers, or who might be able to look at them. The site has a number of file conversion tools, among them a PDF to .doc converter. If you need to convert multiple files, this is also a great way to do them all at once.

  1. Go to the pdf to doc converter.
  2. Click Select Files… to choose a file or files you want to convert.
  3. When you’ve selected all of your files, click Open.
  4. After the process finishes, your files will be available for download on that page for up to 6 hours
