The second season of Jessica Jones won’t arrive on Netflix until at least 2018, but that hasn’t stopped fans from wanting to know more about what Marvel and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg have planned for the series.

Although there isn’t much being revealed about the narrative direction the show will take at this point, Rosenberg recently made one thing clear: Female filmmaker will be charting the superhero’s future.

According to Mo Ryan of Variety, Rosenberg has announced that all 13 episodes of the second season of Jessica Jones will be directed by women. Ryan posted the news on Twitter while attending Rosenberg’s panel at the Transform Hollywood symposium.

With at least two — and possibly three — seasons of shows still to debut on Netflix before Jessica Jones returns, there’s no word yet on who might be behind the camera for the second season. The follow-up to the series’ acclaimed first season isn’t expected to begin shooting until mid- to late 2017 at the earliest, as Iron Fist and the team-up miniseries The Defenders (which brings together the cast of all four Marvel series on Netflix) are both scheduled to debut before Jessica Jones kicks off its Season Two.

The first season of Jessica Jones did feature some female directors, but the majority of episodes were helmed by male directors.

Rosenberg, who co-founded the League of Hollywood Women Writers and has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Writers Guild of America Awards, has been a vocal advocate for shaking up the Hollywood status quo when it comes to gender trends behind the camera.

There’s no official premiere date for the second season of Jessica Jones at this point, but it’s expected to follow both Iron Fist and The Defenders, and possibly the first season of The Punisher spinoff series.

Marvel’s Netflix universe is dead, but its legacy lives on
The Defenders

I didn't expect to miss Marvel's gritty Netflix heroes as much as I do, but here we are.

After 13 seasons of generally great television, the interconnected adventures of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and their supporting cast of allies and enemies have seemingly shifted into the past-tense. A casualty of the changing landscape in the streaming video environment, this ambitious experiment ended not with a bang, but a whimper, as the third, lame-duck season of Jessica Jones debuted June 14, long after the series' fate was sealed.

Marvel and Netflix are breaking up as Disney ramps up for Disney Plus, which will have its own set of exclusive Marvel programs, but the Defenders aren't finished quite yet. The third and final season of Jessica Jones will debut on the streaming service on June 14, bringing the end of the long-running Marvel-Netflix collaboration.

What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in May 2024
Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan as Colin and Penelope looking at each other in Bridgerton.

Netflix has generally weathered the aftermath of the 2023 Hollywood strikes better than its streaming rivals. However, Netflix's lineup in May looks significantly weaker than in the recent past. There's a distinct lack of blockbuster movies from other studios. Even Netflix's original series are slowing down this month. The most significant arrival is Bridgerton season 3, and Netflix is splitting that season into two parts, making fans wait until June to get some closure.

There are other highlights, including Jerry Seinfeld's Unfrosted, Blood of Zeus, and the complete run of the animated spy comedy Archer. But compared to the shows and movies that Netflix had earlier in 2024, it's really lackluster.
