Whether you need a mobile workstation or a mobile gaming rig, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 offers the best balance of performance, size, and pricing. Pairing AMD’s eight-core Ryzen 9 4900HS processor with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2060 graphics in an ultraportable Max-Q form factor, the ROG Zephyrus G14 weighs just 3.5 pounds, yet delivers performance that can take on Intel’s Core i9-9900K desktop processor in terms of core and thread counts.

The notebook ships with a 14-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Gamers will appreciate that this system delivers a respectable 64 frames per second on intensive games like Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey at high settings. It offers the power of AMD’s processor and Nvidia’s GeForce graphics in a package that starts at a modest $1,050. If you want to game on a larger display, a ROG Zephyrus G15 with a 15.6-inch display has also been announced and is listed as coming soon. That laptop has a starting price of $1,299.

Dell G5 SE

Dell’s G5 SE combines AMD’s Ryzen 7 4800H processor with a Radeon RX 5600M in a 15-inch form factor. This notebook uses AMD’s silicon for the processor and graphics, and also benefits from the company’s SmartShift software optimization, which helps to drive more performance to either the CPU or GPU based on where it’s needed. SmartShift should deliver a boost in power without sacrificing too much battery life.

For a gaming-centric laptop, the Dell G5 SE starts at an affordable $879, but our review unit also shipped with a 144Hz display for responsive gaming action, 512GB solid-state drive, and 16GB of memory for just $1,200.

Designed as an affordable notebook with upgraded aesthetics, HP’s Envy lineup is a great bet for those who want a premium finish without breaking the bank. Along with either 13- or 15-inch options, HP’s convertible is available in a range of Ryzen 4000 configurations that start with a Ryzen 3 4300U and go up to a Ryzen 7 4700U.

If you need a convertible for travel, you’ll likely want to opt for the 13.3-inch model, while those who need the extra screen real estate will want to choose the 15.6-inch version. Both models start at just $700, with the smaller of the two models weighing less than three pounds. It’s a might attractive laptop at an even more attractive price.

Acer Swift 3

Don’t let its Chromebook-like price fool you. Priced starting at $650, the wallet-friendly Swift 3 makes a great companion around the home or dorm room, and will give any Intel-powered Ultrabook a run for its money. Despite packing in a 14-inch FHD display and AMD’s eight-core Ryzen 7 4700U processor under the hood to get tasks done, the Swift 3 weighs just 2.6 pounds.

Fortunately for students on a budget, a low starting price doesn’t mean compromises — the Swift 3 packs in a gorgeous display with slim bezels, promises 11.5 hours of battery life, and ships with a spacious 512 GB solid-state drive for all your files. You get all that in a package that measures just 0.63 inches thick.

HP ProBook 445 G7 and ProBook 455 G7

Unlike competitors that debuted consumer notebooks with Ryzen 4000 first, HP’s initial embrace of AMD’s silicon began on its commercial laptops. The HP ProBook 445 G7 is one of the first business-oriented laptops to ship with Ryzen 4000 chips, so you’ll be getting the durability of HP’s notebooks — like a spill-resistant backlit keyboard and Sure View privacy display on an ultra-bright 1,000-nit screen — with the performance of AMD’s processor.

Given the feature set, the $606 starting price makes this one of the most affordable commercial laptops on the market. Configurations start with a quad-core Ryzen 3 4300U processor in a 14-inch package. If you need a larger display, the 15.6-inch ProBook G7 starts at just $622 with similar features.

Lenovo Legion 5 15-inch

Lenovo’s Legion 5 laptop is ideally suited for content creation and gaming, given that it pairs AMD’s Ryzen 4000 processor with rival Nvidia’s GeForce RTX graphics. This ray-tracing-capable system starts at under $1,000 and can be configured with either a six-core Ryzen 5 4600H or eight-core Ryzen 7 4800H processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 1650 or 1650 Ti graphics.

Lenovo offers plenty of configuration options, and the 15.6-inch FHD display with up to 144Hz refresh rate will help gamers stay on top of the action in a package that starts at 5.5 pounds.

HP Omen 15

With a starting price of $1,000, HP’s redesigned Omen 15 for 2020 packs plenty of performance in a thinner, faster, and sleeker design. Less is more with this year’s design, as the Omen 15 sheds its fancy secondary display in favor of a more standard keyboard layout complete with a large trackpad, making it ideally suited for mobile gamers and those who need to get work done on the go.

Despite being 11% slimmer than its predecessor, this gaming laptop still clocks in at nearly 5.5 pounds to accommodate up to Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q graphics alongside AMD’s Ryzen 7 4800H processor. Ports are aplenty — the only drawback is that the laptop relies on a standard charging port rather than USB-C.

Asus TUF Gaming A15, A17

Image used with permission by copyright holder

Equipped with a 15.6-inch screen, this gaming notebook offers a lot for gamers to like, including a fast 144Hz refresh rate to reduce screen tears and stutters during fast action games. This gaming notebook stays competitive with a Ryzen 7 4800H processor coupled with rival Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1660 Ti for graphics performance. Serious gamers will want to choose the maxed-out configuration with a GeForce RTX 2060 card, though upgrades quickly add to the $1,144 starting price. What sets this gaming notebook apart from others in its class is its rugged durability — this portable powerhouse is MIL-STD-810H rated, comes with self-cleaning dual fans, and ships in a package weighing just 5.07 pounds.

Gamers — or mobile workstation users — who need a bit of extra screen real estate can choose the TUF A17, which ships with a larger 17.3-inch display. Besides the portability tradeoff, the larger $1,249 model comes with a slightly slower 120Hz refresh rate, larger 1TB hard drive.

MSI Bravo 15

Designed for gamers on Team Red, the Bravo series features AMD 7nm processors and graphics, pairing up to a Ryzen 7 4800H with Radeon RX5500M graphics. With a premium metal lid and a slightly more gaming forward design, the Bravo series will appeal to those who want something a bit edgier. MSI’s Cooler Blast system not only helps to keep heat under control but it also optimizes system performance to deliver more than seven stated hours of battery life.

Gamers and creatives will appreciate AMD FreeSync support on the FHD IPS display with minimal bezels and 120Hz refresh, Hi-Res Audio tuning for an immersive experience, and the ability to monitor performance with MSI’s Dragon Center software. The Bravo 15 comes with a 15.6-inch display, and MSI will offer a larger Bravo 17 with a 17.3-inch panel in the future. The Bravo 15 starts at just under $1,000 for a configuration with 512GB of storage and 16GB of memory in a gaming package that weighs 4.1 pounds.

Acer Aspire 5

Image used with permission by copyright holder

As one of the most affordable Ryzen 4000-powered laptops on our list, the Acer Aspire 5 still manages to impress with its good looks. With a slim silhouette that measures just 0.71 inches slim, the Aspire 5 is an eye-catching laptop that can give most Ultrabooks a run for their money. Inside, you’re getting a six-core Ryzen 5 4500U processor alongside 8GB of RAM and a 512GB solid-state drive. However, to keep the price at $559, the 15.6-inch display comes in at just HD resolution, with 1,366 x 768 pixels. If you can handle a display that’s less than 1080p FHD, then the Aspire 5 delivers serious value.

Lenovo ThinkPad X13

Business users who love Lenovo’s ThinkPad X series aesthetics now have another powerful option to choose from. The X13 AMD edition starts at just $1,139 and ships with AMD’s latest Ryzen 4000 silicon. Like its Intel cousin, discrete graphics aren’t an option on this 13-inch thin-and-light computing companion, but the AMD edition ships with integrated Radeon graphics.

Modern connectivity, including Wi-Fi 6 radios and optional integrated mobile broadband modem makes it easy to connect anywhere. The base model ships with a Ryzen 3 PRO 4450U processor, though upgraded configurations top out with a Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U processor, 16GB DDR4 memory, 1TB solid-state drive, fingerprint reader, and an IR and 720p webcam all in a package that’s been tested to ensure durability.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14

Like the ThinkPad X13 on our list, the ThinkPad T14 comes in plenty of configurations, allowing businesses to customize the options they need. All of our Lenovo’s ThinkPad undergo a series of testing for durability, and the T14 is no different, allowing you to take this laptop from the office and into the field.

Starting at $1,319, the base configuration is equipped with a Ryzen 5 PRO 4650U processor, and upgraded configurations top out with a Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U chip. Integrated Radeon graphics come standard like its smaller X13 cousin, but unlike the Intel model, you won’t be able to upgrade to a discrete GPU here. With the T14, however, you get a larger 14-inch FHD display that can reach up to 250 nits of brightness on select configurations.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s

Image used with permission by copyright holder

The ThinkPad T14s is designed for those who value performance and mobility in a single package. With up to 16.4 hours of stated battery life in a durable-tested package that weighs just 2.8 pounds, the T14s comes with many of the amenities of its slightly thicker and slightly heavier T14 sibling. But don’t let this laptop’s diminutive size fool you — it’s still loaded with features, including a 14-inch FHD display with touchscreen and privacy guard options that can reach 500 nits of brightness.

An upgrade to a mobile broadband modem isn’t available on this slim powerhouse, but you’re still getting Wi-Fi 6 in configurations that start with a Ryzen 5 PRO and top out with a Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U processor. Pricing starts at $1,529, and you’ll be paying a slight premium for Lenovo’s engineering efforts to make this slim design possible.

Lenovo ThinkPad E14, E15

Here, you’re getting a Ryzen 5 4500U processor to start alongside 256GB of solid-state storage and 4GB of RAM on a 14-inch FHD display with options to upgrade to a faster 4000-series processor, more storage, or additional RAM. The E15 brings a larger 15.6-inch display to the mix at the same affordable starting price should you need a larger canvas to get work done.

A 13.3-inch touchscreen display, optional pen for taking handwritten notes, and support for HP Fast Charge to replenish the battery to 50% in as little as 30 minutes make this a laptop a solid choice. The Immersed Visor appears on the left and Apple Vision Pro on the right.

The Vision Pro is impressive, but it's not for everyone. That's why some people are already returning their orders just two weeks after the $3,500 product first launched. Fortunately, if that's you, or if you like the concept of Apple's Vision Pro, but aren't convinced it's a match for your needs, there are several alternatives to consider. Similar options start at $500 and climb to $3,900.

Some of the best VR headsets available now offer many of the same capabilities, but require a VR-ready Windows gaming PC. Others fall short of the Vision Pro's specifications, but are still great choices at a much lower price. Either way, it's a great time to review what Vision Pro alternatives you can buy right now and what's coming in the near future.
