The most iconic meme game is coming to Nintendo Switch Online this month

Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack tier membership just got some legendary Sega Genesis games for its final June 2022 update. One of those titles happens to be Zero Wing: a game many have seen without even knowing, thanks to the very iconic, “All your base are belong to us,” meme.

Zero Wing is a classic side-scrolling arcade shooter developed by Toaplan. The game not only was a success in arcades but enjoyed positive reception on the Sega Genesis as well. While those gave the game a name, it gained a whole new following in the early 2000s due to a roughly translated cutscene that used the phrase “All your base are belong to us.” It became one of the internet’s first major memes.

A meme isn’t the only reason to get excited about these new Sega Expansion Pack additions. Joining Zero Wing is Comix Zone, yet another classic game the Genesis is known for. This beat em’ up puts you in control of comic artist, Sketch Turner, and throws you into the world of his comic creations. Using his move set, pet rat, dynamite, and other weapons that can be found along the way, you’re tasked with kicking comic butt and escaping the paperback world.

Next is Mega Man: The Wily Wars, another game that’s earned an iconic status due to its place in gaming culture. This compilation combines Genesis remakes of Mega Man 1-3, but it originally never gained a North American release. This addition marks the second time it’s been officially released in the States with the first being its feature on the Genesis Mini.

The final Genesis game that’s been added to Nintendo Switch Online is Target Earth, originally released as Assault Suit Leynos in Japan. This run-and-gun pseudo platformer is the first in the Assault Suit series.

All four games are available now if you’re subscribed to Switch Online’s Expansion Pack.

Grounded and Pentiment are the first Xbox games to come to Nintendo Switch

During Wednesday's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, we learned about two of the Xbox Game Studios titles that are going multiplatform. The games in question are Obsidian Entertainment's Grounded and Pentiment, and the latter will launch tomorrow on Nintendo Switch.

Earlier this year, various leaks and rumors suggested that first-party Xbox exclusives like Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment could make their way over to competing platforms. Microsoft finally addressed the rumors on February 15, confirming that it planned to bring four of its first-party games to non-Xbox platforms over the course of 2024. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer wouldn't say what any of the specific games were at the time, though, stating that "the teams that are building those games have announced plans that are not too far away." It's now clear that Spencer was partially referring to this Nintendo Direct, as two of the games showed up here.

As part of the ongoing wave of AI-related news at CES 2024, Altec Lansing revealed an artificial intelligence-powered successor to GameShark called AI Shark. More interestingly, the press release regarding this software claims that the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch in September 2024.

"Formerly known as GameShark, AI Shark is set to redefine the gaming landscape with its revolutionary AI-enhanced technology," Altec Lansing explains in a press release. "The innovative gaming software is set to mark a significant leap forward in the gaming experience, bringing enhanced gameplay for beginner-level users. The official launch is planned to coincide with the Nintendo Switch 2 in September 2024."

If the rumor mill is to be trusted (and it rarely is), we might see an exclusive Xbox game on Nintendo Switch soon. The rumor comes from Nate the Hate, a content creator with a track record of correctly predicting game announcements. According to him, Microsoft is preparing to launch a critically acclaimed Xbox game on Nintendo's platform soon. He's staying tight-lipped on what game that actually is, though.

With no confirmation, gaming fans spent the weekend fantasizing about what Xbox title could be Switch-bound. The most common theory is last year's excellent Hi-Fi Rush, which other would-be insiders have backed up. Still, there's no official word on anything, making it the perfect recipe for getting one's hopes up.
