Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty gameplay stuns in first showcase

Koei Tecmo has released the first gameplay trailer for Team Ninja’s upcoming Soulslike title Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, showcasing the game’s Three Kingdoms time period and martial arts combat. If the footage is anything to go by, genre fans may be in for something very special when the game releases next year.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Official Gameplay Trailer

Revealed during Gamescom, the game’s first look trailer gives us our first look at the aggressive, fast-paced combat that seems to channel FromSoftware’s Sekiro more than Team NINJA’s own previous work. By the looks of it, some things are changing with this new title in its aim to set itself apart, though, such as the removal of the genre’s classic stamina gauge, which should allow players much more freedom to react quickly to enemy attacks. The footage shows off no shortage of evasion techniques, including vertical methods that also appear to interrupt foes in the process.

While the game will feature over 10 traditional weapon types for melee combat, development producer Masaaki Yamagiwa tells IGN that players can expect to also discover and use a variety of Wizardy Spells — the game’s take on magic — and multiple mythical Divine Beasts that can be summoned to aid the player in battle. We received a glimpse of the Vermilion Bird raining fire down on a group of foes in the trailer, and it definitely looks like a useful tool to break out when finding yourself overwhelmed.

Team Ninja rose to prominence thanks to 2004’s Ninja Gaiden and its sequels, but in more recent years, the developer has turned its attention to the popular Soulslike genre. With two entries in its successful Nioh franchise and an unexpected team-up with Square-Enix for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin under its belt, Team Ninja has been carving out a spot beside genre creator FromSoftware as an equal. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty seems poised to secure that title more than ever.

Koei Tecmo promises that we’ll see more of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty at Tokyo Game Show 2022 in September, including a playable demo on the show floor. Team Ninja also says that a gameplay trial is on the way, so if this exciting new Soulslike is on your radar, keep an eye out for that in the near future.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is slated for release in early 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.

Xbox Games Showcase can succeed where the PlayStation Showcase struggled
Senua stares ahead wearing war paint.

If there’s one video game presentation happening over the next week that has the most to prove, it’s the Xbox Games Showcase. Despite a strong start to the year with Hi-Fi Rush and a solid Developer Direct showcase, Microsoft’s gaming branch has floundered in recent months because of struggles with its acquisition of Activision Blizzard and the rocky launch of Redfall. With the Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct Double Feature, Microsoft must reconfirm its commitment to gaming and to releasing high-quality first-party exclusives.

That said, Xbox is in an excellent position to do just that because of Sony’s underwhelming May showcase. As the first major gaming presentation of the summer, Sony had the chance to “win” the whole game reveal season early with its PlayStation Showcase. Ultimately, that live stream proved disappointing because of its focus on CGI reveal trailers and live service games.

Where to find Republic Chests in Fortnite
Republic Chest

Star Wars is once again taking over Fortnite with the brand-new Find the Force event, which brings a ton of new quests, items, and cosmetics to the popular battle royale. If you want to complete the full event reward track and earn all of the skins, one of the quests you'll need to knock out is opening a Republic Chest. Of course, you may want to seek these out each game anyways, as opening them will reward you with a new DC-15 Blaster, which is an immensely strong firearm that has infinite ammo and excellent range. Here's where to find Republic Chests.
Where to find Republic Chests and what's in them
Republic Chests can be found at three locations on the Chapter 4 Season 2 map. You'll find some located about halfway between The Citadel and Shattered Slabs, some to the west of Slappy Shores, and some by the road southwest of Frenzy Fields. Land at one of these spots and search the white tent-like buildings there for the chests.

Each Republic Chest contains one of the new DC-15 Blaster firearms alongside a selection of random support or healing items. You'll commonly see Medkits, Small Shield Potions, and Chug Splashes pop out, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting prepared for battle from the items you get from the Republic Chests.
