The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (May 2024)

As of this moment, Madame Web is on top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix, but we promise to never call it one of the best movies on Netflix. It's actually one of the very worst films of 2024 to date, and it has to be considered a top contender for the Razzies. Unfortunately, this is an uncharacteristically light week for movies on Netflix. That's why we're throwing the spotlight on two Netflix originals from last week: The Courier and Mother of the Bride.

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (May 2024)

There are no mid-month blues for Amazon Prime Video this weekend thanks to the arrival of American Fiction. That movie debuted with some fanfare in theaters at the end of 2023, and it now has a chance to find a wider audience. American Fiction is already ranked among the most popular movies on Prime Video, but far behind this month's Amazon original The Idea of You.

Since American Fiction was the only new movie on Prime Video this week, we're also shining a spotlight on Red Eye, a 2005 thriller featuring Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy, both of whom became much bigger stars in the two decades after the film. Those are just two of the films among the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now. And you can find even more selections by just scrolling down.

The best movie and TV show trailers of the week of May 17

Because of the TV upfronts, when advertising time is bought and sold months in advance, it's been an unusually busy week for trailers. There aren't many times that new trailers for Only Murders in the Building and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power wouldn't make the cut. But when rounding up the best movie and TV show trailers of the week of May 17, they can't all be winners.

There's a deceptively simple formula to making a great trailer. It has to show enough to entice the audience and yet not spoil the story by making us feel like we've already seen the major plot points. It's shocking how many movies give away their own ending in the trailer. Fortunately, none of our picks for the week have too many spoilers. And we can't wait to watch these films and TV series.
