What’s new on Disney+ in June 2024

Amandla Stenberg in The Acolyte.

After the very slight programming schedule that it had in May, Disney+‘s lineup in June actually has some new shows that aren’t related to Marvel, Doctor Who, or Star Wars. However, the big attraction for the month is still the new Star Wars series The Acolyte, which is getting a two-episode premiere on June 4.

Disney is also celebrating Donald Duck’s 90th anniversary this month by adding three classic cartoons starring the iconic character. Although that does raise a few questions: Why are only three Donald Duck cartoons being added? And shouldn’t all of the Disney cartoon shorts have been on Disney+ by now?

Regardless, it’s heartening to see that there are more viewing options this month, especially from National Geographic. Sci-fi fans will also get to enjoy the remaining episodes of Doctor Who‘s current season.

Our roundup of everything new on Disney+ in June 2024 can be found below, with our favorites highlighted in bold.

What’s new on HBO and Max in June 2024
Matt Smith in House of the Dragon.

Long before Max came along, Game of Thrones was one of the biggest hits in the history of HBO. The prequel series, House of the Dragon, hasn't quite reached those same heights. But after a two-year hiatus, it's good to have the dragons around again even if the second season will only have eight episodes instead of 10.

Most of the highlights this month come from HBO's original programming, including the new series Fantasmas, a documentary called Ren Faire, and a presentation of Jeremy O. Harris' Slave Play. As for the newly added movies in June, it's hard to get very excited about flicks like Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. There are some film highlights, including the 2013 remake of Evil Dead and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But for the most part, this month's movie lineup is very disappointing.

What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in June 2024
Glen Powell and Adria Arjona in Hit Man.

Sometimes Netflix truly has the best of both worlds, as exemplified by the new arrivals in June. Netflix split Bridgerton season 3 in two so it could save some episodes premiering this month, which only strengths the lineup of originals that also includes the third and final season of Sweet Tooth and Hit Man, the new film starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona.

But Netflix isn't fully reliant on original content as long as it can grab shows like Dexter and How I Met Your Mother, or films like Crazy Rich Asians and The Lego Batman Movie from other studios. Additionally, the Netflix algorithm is always surprising us by picking an obscure flick that suddenly races to the top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. And it's almost impossible to pick which movies will achieve that breakout success.
