“TweetDeck is currently down while we look into an issue. Apologies for the inconvenience,” the company said — in a tweet, naturally.
According to a TechCrunch report on Friday, the bug was discovered by a guy called Geoff Evason, a TweetDeck user living in Sydney, Australia.
Evason claimed that a bug had given him access to “hundreds” of Twitter and Facebook accounts through TweetDeck.
“I didn’t do anything special to make this happen,” he told TechCrunch.
On his website, Evason was keen to make clear that he hadn’t hacked TweetDeck. “I just logged in one day, the account was slower than normal, and I could post from many more accounts,” he said.
In a tweet directed at TweetDeck, Evason posted a picture (below) of all the accounts to which he had inadvertently been given access, before sending a tweet from one of them to back up his claim.
London-based TweetDeck was bought by Twitter for some $40 million in May last year. The app is popular with so-called ‘power users’ of the microblogging service, enabling them to easily manage multiple Twitter and Facebook accounts in a single window.
Friday’s news comes just a few days after Twitter admitted that an unfollow bug was causing some users to lose followers.
